Steel City SGP – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does a Steel City SGP box partition actually do inside an electrical box?
The SGP is a steel divider that drops into a 1-5/8 inch deep box to split it into two compartments, keeping high voltage conductors physically separated from low voltage (data, thermostat, signal, control) wiring in the same enclosure. It is a barrier only, not a box and not a cover, so you still need the enclosure and plate.
2) Does the SGP partition come with knockouts for passing wire through?
Zero knockouts. It is a solid steel barrier with no pre-punched openings, which is the point: conductors on the two sides stay in their own compartments rather than crossing through the divider.
3) Is the Steel City SGP partition made in the USA for a Buy American spec?
Country of origin is the United States. That matters on federal, municipal, and institutional jobs carrying domestic-content language, and it is the part number SGP you would list on the submittal.
4) Do I need a metal partition, or can I just run low voltage in the same box as line voltage?
A steel barrier like the SGP is what lets one enclosure carry both high and low voltage circuits with the separation electrical inspectors look for. Without a barrier you would need two separate boxes. The SGP is the barrier route for a 1-5/8 inch deep box, and because it is steel rather than plastic it also keeps the compartment grounded metal throughout.
5) Is the SGP partition galvanized, and can I use it in a damp mechanical room?
The steel is pre-galvanized with a silver finish, which gives it corrosion resistance for ordinary interior commercial and industrial work such as control panels and multi-circuit enclosures. It is a bare metallic barrier, not a painted or powder-coated part.
6) How is the SGP partition sold, individually or in a box of 25?
Each. One SGP partition per selling unit, so if you are dividing twenty boxes on a tenant-improvement job you order twenty.
