Ideal Industries 83-3281 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which color tap splice do I need for 12 AWG wire?
Yellow. IDEAL's tap splices follow the standard terminal color code: red covers 22-18 AWG, blue covers 16-14 AWG, and yellow covers 12-10 AWG. For 12 AWG you want the yellow one, part number 83-3281.
2) What is a tap splice used for versus a butt splice?
A tap splice lets you branch a new conductor off a run without cutting the run, so the through wire stays continuous and a tap wire is crimped into the same barrel. A butt splice joins two cut ends end to end. If you're pulling a feed off an existing circuit conductor for a light, fan or accessory, the tap splice is the piece you want.
3) How are these IDEAL tap splices sold, individually or in a pack?
They come as a box of 25 for each wire-gauge/color choice, so you're buying a quantity of one size rather than an assortment. If a job needs more than one gauge, order a box per color.
4) Can I crimp these with a standard insulated terminal crimper?
Yes. These are color-coded insulated terminals, so any crimp tool with the red/blue/yellow insulated-terminal nests works. Match the nest to the splice color: red for the 22-18 AWG, blue for the 16-14 AWG, yellow for the 12-10 AWG. The shouldered barrel insulation seats the terminal in the jaw so the crimp lands on the barrel, not the sleeve.
5) Can I put two different wire sizes into one of these tap splices?
Both conductors need to fall inside the same rated range for that splice. Mixing a 14 AWG run with a 10 AWG tap crosses two different splices, so neither crimps correctly. Size the splice to the pair: 22-18 red, 16-14 blue, 12-10 yellow.
6) Will these tap splices hold up in a damp or corrosive location?
The barrels are tin-plated brass, which resists corrosion better than bare steel, and the butted-seam barrel won't split under full crimp pressure. That said, the insulation is a standard vinyl-style sleeve, not a heat-shrink or adhesive-lined seal, so it is not a waterproof connection on its own.
7) Will these grip thicker THHN insulation, or only thin appliance wire?
The entry is expanded to take a range of insulation diameters and to support the jacket behind the crimp, so heavier building-wire insulation seats without having to strip back extra. The gauge range still governs: pick by conductor size, 22-18, 16-14 or 12-10 AWG.
8) What keeps the wire from pulling out of an IDEAL tap splice?
The inside of the barrel is serrated. When you crimp, those serrations bite into the strands, which both resists pull-out and keeps contact resistance down so the joint doesn't run warm.
