1) Can this splice be buried directly in the ground without conduit?
Yes. The Thermo-Shrink UF splice kit is direct burial approved without conduit protection, and it is UL486D Listed for underground splicing. Backfill with compacted soil and keep sharp rock away from the splice body.
2) A trencher cut my underground feeder. Can this kit repair a missing section of cable?
That is what the stretcher kit design is for. It restores damaged cable sections from 7 to 10 inches, so you cut out the chewed-up length and the kit bridges the gap rather than requiring you to pull new cable. If the damaged run is longer than 10 inches, you will need to splice in a piece of cable with a kit at each end.
3) Does the 14-8 AWG kit handle UF cable with a ground conductor?
Yes for the smaller sizes. The 14-8 AWG kit, 46-400, covers 14/3 both with and without ground, up through 8/3 without ground. So a three-conductor-with-ground 14 gauge UF is within range, but at 8 gauge the kit is specified for cable without a ground conductor.
4) What voltage and temperature is the Ideal Thermo-Shrink UF splice kit rated for?
600V maximum with a 105 C continuous temperature rating. That covers ordinary residential and commercial underground feeder and branch circuits at 120/240V and 277/480V.
5) Do I need a heat gun to install this, or will a torch work?
This is a heat-activated shrink system and it calls for an approved heat gun. Apply heat evenly and work from the center outward so no air pockets are trapped, then confirm the tubing has fully shrunk and sealed around every conductor and at the cable jacket interface before backfilling.
6) I am splicing 2 AWG underground cable. Which kit number, 46-401 or 46-405?
Both cover 2 AWG. 46-401 is the 8-2 AWG kit rated 600V, and 46-405 is listed as a 2-8 AWG kit. For a 600V underground feeder repair, order 46-401. Above 2 AWG, step up to 46-402 for 4-1/0 AWG.
7) Will the splice hold up if part of it stays exposed above grade?
The construction is UV resistant thermoplastic, so prolonged sunlight exposure will not break it down if a section stays exposed during or after installation. The seal itself is what handles moisture in the buried portion.
