The 3 inch roll is usually enough for a single residential service run or a landscape lighting trench, while the 6 inch gives a wider visual band over a multi-conduit or primary distribution trench where an excavator bucket may only clip part of the run.
2) Will this warning tape show up on a cable locator?
No. This is non-detectable polyethylene tape, so it carries no metallic core and will not respond to a locator or interfere with locating equipment already tracing the circuit. It is a visual warning only, caught by the operator's eye during excavation. If you need the tape itself to be traceable from the surface, you need a detectable tape with a metallized foil core instead.
3) How deep should underground electrical warning tape be buried above the cable?
Lay it 12 to 18 inches above the buried electrical cable during backfill, not directly on the conduit. That gap gives a digger warning before the bucket reaches the cable. Run it continuously along the full length of the installation, keep it flat against the fill so compaction does not bunch it, and make sure it spans the full width of the run.
4) How much trench does one roll of this Ideal Industries tape cover?
Each roll runs 1000 feet, which covers a full service run or a long feeder without splicing in a second roll. On long jobs, overlap the ends where rolls meet so there is no unmarked gap over the cable.
5) Is red the right color tape for a buried electric line?

Other utilities use different colors, so do not use this roll over gas, water, or communications lines.
6) Will this tape break down in aggressive soil?
The polyethylene film is formulated to resist acids and alkalis found in soil, which is what degrades ordinary printed marking materials underground. That matters most in fill near concrete, in high-alkali or heavily fertilized ground, and in industrial sites. The print uses lead-free pigments and organic ink.
7) Can I use this tape for temporary barricading around an open trench?
It is not intended for that. This is underground warning tape, meant to be buried in the backfill above an electrical run as a permanent record for whoever digs next. For roping off an open excavation above grade, use barricade tape instead. Note the placement of this roll in your as-built records so future crews know it is there.
