F4P UGTAPE3 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will F4P non-detectable underground caution tape work with a cable locator or a metal detector?
No. The F4P underground caution tape is a non-detectable type, meaning it carries no metallic foil or tracer core, so nothing on the tape will register on a locator or metal detector. It works purely as a visual warning to a crew already digging. If your utility needs to be traceable from the surface after backfill, you need detectable tape with a metal core or a separate tracer wire run alongside the conduit.
2) Can F4P underground caution tape be laid directly on the conduit in the trench?
It isn't rated for direct burial contact use, so lay it in the backfill above the line rather than against the pipe or duct. Standard practice is to run it in the trench partway up during backfill, roughly a foot or so above the utility, so an excavator hits the tape before the line. The polyethylene resists chemicals and moisture, which is what lets it survive years in soil, but the rating on record is for that backfill position, not direct burial against the utility.
3) Which color underground tape do I use for electrical versus gas versus fiber?
Three colors are offered and they follow the standard APWA utility color code: red for electric power lines and conduit, yellow for gas, oil, steam and other flammables, and orange for communications, alarm and fiber optic. The red tape is printed "Line Buried Below". Order the color that matches the utility you are covering, since the color is the first thing a backhoe operator reads.
4) Should I use 3 inch or 6 inch wide underground warning tape?
Both widths are stocked in 1000 foot rolls. The 3 inch is the common choice for a single conduit run or a narrow trench, where a 6 inch strip is wider than the excavation is worth. Go 6 inch for wide trenches, duct banks, multiple lines in one trench, or anywhere the machine bucket is wide enough that a narrow ribbon could be missed on the way down. Width is the only thing that changes between them; both are the same polyethylene tape and both come in all three colors.
5) Is F4P underground warning tape flame retardant, and does it contain lead?
Flame retardant, yes, and lead-free. That combination matters on institutional and government work where buried materials get screened for lead content, and inside vaults, manholes or building entries where a flame spread requirement can follow the tape indoors. It is also made in the USA, which covers Buy American language on public projects.
6) Will the printing on buried caution tape stay readable after a few years in the ground?
The warning message is printed in permanent ink on polyethylene film that resists chemicals and moisture, so it is built to stay legible through the soil exposure between install and the next time someone opens the trench. That is the whole job of the tape: it has to be readable at the moment a bucket exposes it, which may be a decade after backfill.
7) Does the red F4P tape have wording printed on it or is it just a colored ribbon?
The red version carries the printed legend "Line Buried Below" in bold permanent ink, so it warns by text as well as by color. Color alone tells a crew what class of utility is below; the printed message is what stops the digging.
