Ideal Industries 84-2341 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which wire gauges do the IDEAL vinyl insulated #10 stud ring terminals cover?
Two gauge ranges are offered: 16-14 AWG (part 84-2241) and 12-10 AWG (part 84-2341). Both land on a #10 stud, so you pick by the conductor you're terminating, not by the stud size.
2) What is the difference between these and the Panduit non-insulated ring terminals?
The IDEAL 84-2241 and 84-2341 are vinyl insulated tin-plated brass. The Panduit alternatives we carry are bare copper and non-insulated: the Pan-Term P10 Series (P10-RD), the P141 Series P14-RC, the Pan-Term P1 Series P188RC, and the P61 Series. Non-insulated barrels are the pick when you are going to apply your own heat shrink, when the terminal has to fit a tight lug space, or when a spec calls for a bare copper barrel. Choose the insulated IDEAL part when you want the strain relief and sleeve built in.
3) I have 18 AWG thermostat wire. Can I use the 16-14 AWG ring terminal?
No. The smaller IDEAL ring terminal (84-2241) is rated 16-14 AWG, and 18 AWG will not crimp reliably in that barrel. For 18 AWG you need a 22-18 AWG terminal. The other option offered here, 84-2341, goes the other way at 12-10 AWG.
4) What is the difference between the IDEAL 84-2241 ring terminal and the Panduit P14-RC?
The IDEAL 84-2241 is a vinyl insulated ring terminal for 16-14 AWG wire on a #10 stud, with shouldered barrel insulation that positions the terminal for crimping and expanded insulation entry for support at the wire jacket. The Panduit P14-RC is a non-insulated copper ring terminal in the Pan-Term P141 series, so there is no vinyl sleeve on the barrel. If the connection needs insulation at the terminal itself, the IDEAL vinyl terminal provides it; if you plan to heat shrink or tape over the barrel, or the terminal sits inside an enclosed lug cover, the non-insulated Panduit is the uninsulated equivalent.
5) Are Panduit Pan-Term non-insulated ring terminals a direct drop-in for the IDEAL 84-2341?
They are not interchangeable without checking two things. The IDEAL 84-2341 is sized for 12-10 AWG wire on a #10 stud and carries a vinyl insulated barrel. The Panduit non-insulated ring terminals - the P61 series, the P141 series P14-RC, and the P188RC - are bare copper, so you would need to confirm the wire range and stud size of the specific Panduit part matches, and the crimp die for a non-insulated barrel is different from the die used on an insulated terminal.
6) Ring terminal or fork/spade terminal for a motor or panel stud connection?
A ring terminal has to be slipped over the stud, so the nut has to come all the way off, but it cannot vibrate loose off the stud the way a fork terminal can. For motor leads, control panels, and anything that sees vibration, the ring is the one to use. Use a fork or spade only where you need to drop the wire in without removing the nut fully.
7) How many ring terminals come in a box?
The IDEAL vinyl insulated #10 stud ring terminals are packed 1,000 per box, which is the quantity to plan on for panel build or fleet maintenance stock rather than a single repair.
8) Are these terminals OK in a damp or corrosive environment?
The barrels are tin-plated brass, which resists corrosion, and the vinyl insulation covers the barrel. That suits indoor industrial, machine, and vehicle work. They are not a sealed heat-shrink terminal, so for direct wet or marine exposure use an adhesive-lined heat-shrink ring terminal instead.
9) Do I need a special crimper for these insulated ring terminals?
Use an insulated-terminal crimper matched to the insulation color/gauge range. The barrel insulation is shouldered so the terminal seats in the crimp nest at the right depth, and the entry is expanded to accept a range of wire insulation diameters. Non-insulated crimp dies will cut the vinyl.
10) Will the crimp hold up to pull-out on stranded wire?
The barrel has internal serrations that bite the strands to resist pull-out and lower electrical resistance, and the seam is butted so the barrel will not split at full crimp pressure. That is the construction you want on vibrating equipment and on leads that get tugged during service.
11) I need a bare copper ring terminal instead of a vinyl insulated one - what should I use?
The IDEAL 84 series ring terminals are vinyl insulated with tin-plated brass barrels. For a bare metal terminal, Panduit offers non-insulated copper ring terminals including the Pan-Term P10 series P10-RD and the P188RC in the Pan-Term P1 series. Bare terminals are the usual choice where a lug cover, heat shrink, or boot is applied separately, or where the barrel has to be inspected after crimping.
