Sta-Kon RA1223 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RA1223 fork terminal crimp onto?
The RA1223 is sized for 22 to 16 AWG stranded copper conductor. Red insulation is the standard color code for that range, so if you are terminating 14 or 12 AWG you need the next size up (blue body) instead. Crimping 18 AWG control or thermostat wire is right in the middle of its range.
2) What screw or stud size does the RA1223 fork terminal fit?
It is a No. 8 stud/screw terminal. The flanged fork slides in under a loosened #8 screw head on a terminal block, contactor, or thermostat strip without pulling the screw out, which is why it gets used for field service work where removing the screw risks dropping it in the panel.
3) Should I use a fork terminal or a ring terminal on a control panel terminal block?
A fork (spade) terminal like the RA1223 can be installed and removed by just backing the #8 screw off a turn or two, which saves time on troubleshooting and rewiring. A ring terminal requires taking the screw all the way out, but it cannot vibrate off the stud. For panel terminal strips and HVAC control boards that get serviced, the fork is the usual choice; for motor leads or anything with vibration, go with a ring.
4) What is the voltage rating on the Sta-Kon RA1223 terminal?
Rated 600 V, which covers standard 120/208/240/480 V commercial control and power circuits. It is UL recognized under file E9809.
5) Is the RA1223 terminal copper or aluminum, and can I put it on aluminum wire?
The conductor barrel is copper. It is a copper-only terminal, so use it on copper conductors in the 22-16 AWG range. Aluminum branch conductors need a terminal specifically marked AL/CU.
6) Is the RA1223 insulated, and what is the insulation made of?
The barrel is nylon insulated. Nylon takes repeated flexing and abrasion better than vinyl and resists cracking when the crimp tool bites down, so it holds up in panels where conductors get pushed and re-dressed. The flange on the tongue gives the nylon support right out to the screw contact.
7) Is the Sta-Kon RA1223 made in the USA? I have a Buy American requirement on the job.
Country of origin on the RA1223 is the United States. That matters for government, healthcare, and institutional procurement with domestic-content language in the contract.
