Sta-Kon RH9731 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RH9731 crimp onto?
It is sized for 1 AWG conductor (listed as wire size 1AN). Crimping a smaller conductor such as 4 or 6 AWG into a 1 AWG barrel gives you a loose mechanical joint and a hot connection, so step down to the terminal built for that gauge rather than doubling the wire back on itself.
2) Is the Sta-Kon RH9731 ring terminal rated for 600 volt circuits?
Yes, the nylon insulated barrel on the RH9731 carries a 600 V rating, which covers standard commercial branch circuit and panel work. It is also UL listed under file E9809.
3) Is the RH9731 terminal copper or aluminum, and can I put it on aluminum feeder wire?
The barrel is copper, so it is a copper-to-copper connection only. Aluminum feeders need a terminal rated AL9CU or an aluminum lug with the proper inhibitor compound; putting bare copper on aluminum invites galvanic corrosion at the joint.
4) Do I need a special crimper for a 1 AWG nylon insulated ring terminal?
Yes. At 1 AWG this is a heavy barrel, well past what a hand plier style insulated crimper will close. You need a hydraulic or large mechanical lug crimper with the die for 1 AWG. Under-crimping a barrel this size is the usual cause of a joint that heats up under load.
5) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal for a panel or bus bar connection?
A ring like the RH9731 fully encircles the 3/8 inch stud, so the conductor cannot be pulled off without backing the nut all the way out. That is what you want on panels, bus bars, battery studs and anything subject to vibration. A fork or spade slides out from under a loosened screw, which only makes sense where you need fast service disconnects on low-current terminal blocks.
6) What color is the insulation on the Sta-Kon RH9731, and does the color mean anything on the job?
The insulation is white. On nylon insulated terminals the sleeve color is the gauge code technicians read off the bench, so white here goes with the 1 AWG barrel rather than the red, blue or yellow sleeves used on the small gauge ranges.
7) Where is the Sta-Kon RH9731 made? I have country of origin requirements on a government job.
The RH9731 is manufactured in Mexico. If your specification carries a Buy American or domestic content clause, that origin will need to be reviewed against it before you commit the terminal to the submittal.
