Sta-Kon RK717 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RK717 ring terminal take?
The RK717 is sized for 3/0 AWG conductor. It's a one-size barrel, so it won't grip smaller cable like 1/0 or 2/0 reliably, and 4/0 won't enter the barrel. Match the terminal to the actual conductor you're landing, not the breaker size.
2) Will the RK717 terminal fit a 1/4 inch stud or bolt?
Yes. The RK717 has a 1/4 inch ring tongue, so it lands on a 1/4-20 stud or bolt on a bus bar, lug pad, or ground bar. It will also slip over a smaller #10 screw, though you'd normally use a washer to keep it centered.
3) Is this terminal copper or aluminum, and can I put it on aluminum cable?
The barrel is copper, so the RK717 is for copper conductors. Crimping copper-only hardware onto aluminum cable risks galvanic corrosion and a high-resistance joint; for aluminum you need an AL9CU rated lug instead.
4) Can I use this ring terminal on a 480V panel feeder?
The RK717 is rated 600 V, so it covers 480Y/277 and 600 V class circuits as well as ordinary 120/240 work. Insulation on the terminal is not a substitute for conductor insulation rating, but the terminal itself is not the limit at 480 V.
5) Do I need a special crimper for a 3/0 ring terminal?
Yes. At 3/0 AWG this is well past what a hand-squeeze crimper will close. You need a hydraulic or large mechanical crimper with the die set that matches a 3/0 copper barrel. Under-crimping a conductor this size is the usual cause of a hot connection.
6) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal for a 3/0 feeder connection?
Use the ring, which is what the RK717 is. A ring tongue is captive on the stud, so it cannot back off sideways if the nut loosens. Fork or spade tongues are for quick-service points where you want to pull the wire without removing the nut, and they aren't appropriate for a large power conductor under vibration.
7) Is the yellow insulation on this Sta-Kon terminal just color coding or does it mean something?
It's standard color coding for the gauge range. Yellow on the RK717 identifies it as the large-conductor nylon insulated terminal for 3/0 AWG, so a crew can spot the right terminal in a bin without reading the stamp. The insulation itself is nylon, which holds up better to flexing and abrasion than vinyl.
8) Where is the Sta-Kon RK717 made?
Country of origin is Mexico. Useful if you're filling out origin documentation on a government or institutional order.
