Sta-Kon RF4-14 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RF4-14 ring terminal take?
The RF4-14 is sized for 4 AWG conductor. It is a copper barrel terminal, so it crimps onto stranded copper 4 AWG. If your feeder is a different gauge, you need a different part number in the series, because a crimp outside the rated range will not hold mechanically or electrically.
2) Is this nylon insulated ring terminal rated for 600 volt circuits?
Yes. The Sta-Kon RF4-14 carries a 600 V rating and is UL recognized under file E9809, so it is usable on standard 120/208, 277/480 and similar building power circuits within that limit.
3) Can I use the Sta-Kon RF4-14 on aluminum conductor?
No. The barrel is copper, so it is intended for copper conductor only. Aluminum feeders need a lug listed AL9CU or AL-only; putting aluminum into a copper-only crimp barrel creates a joint that corrodes and loosens.
4) Nylon insulated versus vinyl insulated ring terminal, which should I use?
The RF4-14 uses a nylon insulating sleeve. Nylon takes higher heat and resists abrasion and cut-through better than vinyl, which matters in a tight panel where conductors are bundled and pulled around corners, or in equipment that runs warm. Vinyl is the cheaper choice for low-heat, low-stress control wiring. For a 4 AWG power termination in a cabinet, nylon is the normal spec.
5) Does a 4 AWG ring terminal like this need a hydraulic or ratcheting crimper?
Yes. At 4 AWG the barrel is far beyond what a hand plier crimper will compress properly. A full cycle ratcheting or hydraulic crimp tool with the correct die for the gauge is required to get a gas-tight joint. The terminal itself ships as the lug only, with no stud hardware, so you supply the bolt, washer and nut at the equipment end.
6) Why is the RF4-14 terminal yellow?
Yellow is the standard color code for the heavier gauge range in insulated terminals, and on the RF4-14 it flags a 4 AWG barrel. On a panel with mixed terminations, the yellow insulation lets an electrician confirm at a glance that the right size lug went on the right conductor without reading the stamp.
