Sta-Kon RF4-38 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RF4-38 ring terminal take?
The RF4-38 is sized for 4 AWG conductor. It's a one-size barrel, so it won't grip smaller wire like 6 or 8 AWG reliably, even doubled over. Match the terminal to the conductor you're actually landing.
2) Will this ring terminal fit a 3/8 inch stud or bolt?
Yes. The RF4-38 ring tongue is a 3/8 inch size, so it drops over a 3/8 inch stud, bolt, or breaker lug screw. If your stud is 5/16 or 1/4, the ring will be loose on it and you want the matching smaller ring size instead.
3) Is the Sta-Kon RF4-38 rated for 600 volt circuits?
Rated 600 V, and UL recognized under file E9809. That covers typical commercial branch circuit and control panel work at 600 V or less.
4) Is the barrel copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum conductor?
The barrel is copper. That makes it a copper-only terminal, so use it on copper conductor. For aluminum or dual-rated runs you need a lug marked AL9CU, not this one.
5) Why is the Sta-Kon 4 AWG ring terminal yellow?
Yellow is the color code on the nylon insulation that identifies the wire range, 4 AWG on the RF4-38. On a panel where crews are also running red (22-16 AWG) and blue (16-14 AWG) terminals, the color tells an inspector at a glance that the right size barrel went on the right conductor.
6) Why choose a nylon insulated ring terminal over vinyl or a non-insulated lug?
Nylon insulation takes more abuse than vinyl, it resists cracking when the terminal is flexed or crimped hard and holds up better to heat and solvents in a panel or engine compartment. The RF4-38 is a nylon insulated type. A non-insulated lug would need separate heat shrink to get the same protection at the barrel.
7) Is a ring terminal or a fork terminal better for a vibrating panel?
Use the ring. A ring tongue like the RF4-38 is a closed barrel and cannot back off the stud if the nut loosens, which is why it's the normal choice on motor connections, transformers, battery studs, and anything that vibrates. A fork or spade is only worth it when you need to pull the wire off without fully removing the screw.
