Sta-Kon RC733 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RC733 ring terminal accept?
The RC733 is sized for 12-10 AWG conductor. The yellow nylon insulation is the standard color code for that range, so on a panel where blue barrels are 16-14 and red are 22-16, the yellow ones are your 12-10 crimps. Running it on anything smaller than 10 or larger than 12 AWG will give you a loose or unseated crimp.
2) Will the RC733 ring terminal fit a 3/8 inch stud or bolt?
Yes. The RC733 ring tongue is made for a 3/8 inch bolt or stud, which is the common size on larger breaker lugs, bus bars, ground bars and battery studs. If your stud is 1/4 or 5/16, this ring will sit loose under the nut and you want the matching smaller ring size in the same 12-10 yellow range.
3) Does the RC733 ring terminal carry a UL listing for an inspected job?
The RC733 is UL under file E9809. For an inspector or a submittal package, that plus the 600 V rating and the 12-10 AWG conductor range is what you cite for the termination.
4) Is the barrel on the RC733 copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum wire?
The conductor barrel is copper, so the RC733 is a copper-only terminal. Use it on copper conductors, 12-10 AWG. Aluminum building wire needs a terminal specifically marked AL or AL/CU, not this one.
5) Is a nylon insulated ring terminal better than a vinyl one for a hot panel?
Nylon barrels like the one on the RC733 are tougher than vinyl: they resist abrasion and cracking when the terminal is pulled through a wireway or flexed at a terminal block, and they hold up to higher heat. Vinyl insulated terminals are cheaper and fine for low-stress, cooler locations. For control panels, motor connections and anywhere the lead gets handled, the nylon version is the one to spec.
6) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal on a 3/8 inch stud connection?
A ring terminal, like the RC733, is captive: the bolt passes through a closed tongue so the conductor cannot back out if the nut loosens. A fork or spade slides off sideways and is only appropriate where the screw stays captive and the connection sees no vibration. For grounding, battery studs, bus bars and anything that vibrates, use the closed ring.
7) What voltage is the Sta-Kon RC733 ring terminal rated for?
600 V. That covers standard commercial and industrial branch circuits, 120/208, 277/480 and control wiring, so it is usable in panelboards, motor control centers and equipment enclosures operating at or below 600 volts.
8) Do I need a special crimper for Sta-Kon nylon insulated terminals?
Use an insulated-terminal crimp tool with the color-coded die for the yellow 12-10 range. The die compresses the barrel through the nylon sleeve without splitting it. A bare-terminal or non-insulated die will cut the insulation and give you an uncontrolled crimp, and pliers are not an acceptable substitute on a 600 V termination.
9) Are Sta-Kon RC733 terminals made in the USA for a Buy American job?
Country of origin on the RC733 is the United States. For federally funded or Buy American specified work, that is the value to put on your submittal, along with the UL file E9809.
10) I need to standardize ring terminals across my facility. How do I order the right ones by part number?
Sta-Kon ring terminals break down by conductor range and stud size. The RC733 is the 12-10 AWG, 3/8 inch bolt, yellow nylon version. Keep the yellow 12-10 terminals stocked in each stud size your equipment uses, and keep the smaller-gauge color codes separate so a tech is not guessing at the crimp die. All of them are copper barrel, 600 V.
