Sta-Kon RF737 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RF737 ring terminal take?
The RF737 is built for 4 AWG copper conductor. It is a single-size barrel, so it won't crimp down reliably on 6 AWG or smaller strand, and 2 AWG won't enter the barrel. If your feeder is a different gauge, move to the matching ring terminal for that size rather than forcing this one.
2) Is the RF737 terminal copper or aluminum, and can I put it on aluminum conductor?
The barrel is copper, so it is for copper conductor only. Aluminum feeder needs an AL-rated or AL9CU dual-rated terminal instead; crimping copper onto aluminum invites galvanic corrosion at the joint.
3) Can I use the RF737 ring terminal on a 480 volt panel?
It is rated 600 V, so 480 V three-phase and all common 120/208 and 277/480 building circuits are within rating. Insulation rating is on the terminal itself; the conductor insulation and any sleeving still have to carry their own rating for the circuit.
4) Do I need a special crimper for a 4 AWG nylon insulated ring terminal?
Yes. At 4 AWG the RF737 is past the range of a hand pliers-style insulated crimper. You need a heavy duty ratcheting or hydraulic crimp tool with the die that covers 4 AWG insulated terminals. A partial crimp on a 4 AWG barrel is the usual cause of a hot termination, so match the tool to the barrel size.
5) What is the difference between a ring terminal like the RF737 and a fork or spade terminal?
The RF737 is a closed ring: the bolt passes through the hole, so the connection cannot vibrate off the stud even if the nut backs off slightly. A fork or spade slips on and off without removing the nut, which is faster for service work but is not acceptable where vibration or a captive connection matters. For a 4 AWG feeder landing on a 3/8 inch stud, the closed ring is the right choice.
6) Why is the Sta-Kon RF737 yellow?
Yellow is the standard color code for the heavier wire range on nylon insulated terminals, and on the RF737 it corresponds to 4 AWG. The nylon sleeve is yellow throughout, so an inspector or the next electrician can read the wire range off the termination without pulling it apart. It is a color-code identifier, not a decorative finish.
7) Where is the Sta-Kon RF737 made?
Manufactured in Mexico. Buyers working to domestic-content or procurement-origin rules should note that for their documentation.
