Sta-Kon RF717 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RF717 ring terminal take?
The RF717 is sized for 4 AWG copper conductor. It is a one-size barrel, so it will not grip smaller conductors like 6 or 8 AWG reliably even if the strands fit loosely. Match the terminal to the actual conductor gauge you are landing, not to the lug hole.
2) Will the RF717 fit a 1/4 inch stud or bolt?
Yes. The RF717 ring tongue is drilled for a 1/4 inch bolt or stud, so it lands on a 1/4-20 breaker lug, bus stud, or ground stud without a washer adapter. A larger stud will not pass through the ring.
3) Is the Sta-Kon RF717 rated for 600 volt circuits?
The RF717 carries a 600 V rating and is UL recognized under file E9809. That covers typical commercial branch circuits, panelboard and motor terminations up to 600 V.
4) Why is the RF717 terminal yellow, and does the color mean anything?
Yellow is the standard insulation color code for the heavy wire range this terminal covers, and the RF717 is yellow. On the job it is how an electrician confirms at a glance that a 4 AWG barrel was used rather than a smaller red or blue terminal. The insulation itself is nylon.
5) Should I use a nylon insulated ring terminal or a fork terminal on a panel stud?
A ring terminal like the RF717 is the right choice anywhere the connection is safety-critical or subject to vibration, because the closed tongue cannot slip off a loosened stud. A fork or spade terminal only earns its place where you need to drop the wire off the screw without fully removing the hardware. For grounding and for motor and panel studs, use the ring.
6) Does the RF717 need a special crimp tool?
It is a crimp terminal, not a mechanical screw lug, so it needs a crimper matched to a 4 AWG insulated barrel. A hand crimper intended for 22-10 AWG insulated terminals will not form this size. Plan on a heavy-duty insulated-terminal crimp die or hydraulic tool for the install, and no solder.
7) Is the RF717 copper or aluminum, and can I land it on aluminum wire?
The terminal body is copper, so it is for copper conductors only. Aluminum conductor requires a terminal marked AL or AL9CU with the appropriate inhibitor compound; this one is not that part.
