1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RF727 ring terminal take?
The RF727 is sized for 4 AWG conductor. Yellow nylon insulation is the color code on this terminal, so if the wire you are landing is smaller than 4 AWG the barrel will not crimp down tight and you need a different size terminal.
2) Is the Sta-Kon RF727 rated for 600 volt circuits?
600 V is the rating on this nylon insulated ring terminal, which covers standard commercial branch circuit and panel work. It also carries UL file E9809.
3) Is the RF727 terminal copper or aluminum?
Copper barrel with nylon insulation. It is intended for copper conductor, not aluminum, and is not a bimetallic AL/CU lug.
4) Do I need a special crimp tool for a 4 AWG Sta-Kon ring terminal?
At 4 AWG this is well beyond hand-squeeze pliers territory. Use a heavy duty ratcheting or hydraulic crimper with the die matched to the yellow 4 AWG Sta-Kon barrel. An undercrimped 600 V connection on a stud is the usual cause of a hot termination.
5) Nylon insulated or vinyl insulated ring terminal, which should I use?
The RF727 uses nylon insulation, which holds up better to abrasion, heat and solvents than vinyl and resists cracking when the barrel is flared during crimp. For 4 AWG at 600 V in a panel, control cabinet or motor connection, nylon is the one to specify. Vinyl is a lighter duty, lower cost choice generally used on smaller gauges.
