Sta-Kon RE6-516 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RE6-516 ring terminal take?
The RE6-516 is sized for 6 AWG conductor. It's a nylon insulated ring terminal with a copper barrel, so it crimps onto stranded copper 6 AWG. If your conductor is 8 or 4 AWG, you need a different terminal in the series, not this one.
2) Can I use this terminal on aluminum conductor?
No. The RE6-516 barrel is copper, so it's for copper conductor only. Aluminum requires a lug rated AL9CU or AL-only with the proper inhibitor compound.
3) Can I use this blue nylon ring terminal on a 480V circuit?
Yes. The Sta-Kon RE6-516 carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120, 240, 277 and 480 V building and control circuits. It's UL recognized under file E9809.
4) Why is this Sta-Kon terminal blue if 6 AWG usually isn't a blue color code?
The RE6-516 insulation is blue, but on the Sta-Kon nylon ring terminals the color is the manufacturer's series marking rather than the familiar red/blue/yellow 22-10 AWG scheme. Go by the stamped size: this one is 6 AWG with a 5/16 inch ring. Don't pick it by color alone on a panel where crews are used to the small-gauge color code.
5) Is a nylon insulated ring terminal better than a vinyl one for panel work?
Nylon insulation, like on the RE6-516, holds up better to heat and abrasion and flexes without splitting, which is why it's the common choice inside gear and control panels where conductors get bent tight. Vinyl insulated terminals are the lower cost option for cooler, less crowded work. Either way, an insulated ring terminal is the choice over a spade or fork when the lug must stay captive on the stud if the nut loosens.
6) Do I need a special crimper for a 6 AWG Sta-Kon ring terminal?
Yes. A 6 AWG copper barrel this size needs a heavy duty crimp tool with the correct die for the barrel, not the small hand tool used for 22-10 AWG insulated terminals. The nylon sleeve is crimped over along with the barrel, so use the insulated-terminal die position. The terminal ships without hardware, so supply your own 5/16 inch nut and washer at the stud.
7) What is the exact part number and origin for the Sta-Kon 6 AWG 5/16 inch ring terminal?
Order it as Sta-Kon RE6-516. It's manufactured in Mexico. One part number covers the configuration: 6 AWG, 5/16 inch bolt, blue nylon insulation.
