Sta-Kon RE727 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RE727 ring terminal take?
The RE727 is sized for 6 AWG conductor. It's a nylon insulated ring terminal with a copper barrel, so it crimps onto 6 AWG stranded copper wire. If your conductor is 8 AWG or 4 AWG, this is the wrong barrel size, a loose or over-stuffed crimp won't hold pull-out.
2) What stud or bolt size does the RE727 ring fit?
The ring on the RE727 is made for a 5/16 inch bolt or stud. It will slip over a 5/16 inch terminal post or 5/16 inch threaded stud on a lug pad, breaker, or busbar. Smaller studs will still pass through but the ring can shift under the washer.
3) Can I crimp the RE727 onto aluminum wire?
No. The barrel is copper and the terminal is intended for copper conductor only. Aluminum feeders need an AL9CU or AL-rated connector with the proper inhibitor compound, a copper-only barrel on aluminum will corrode and overheat at the joint.
4) Can I use this blue ring terminal on a 480V motor connection?
Yes. The RE727 carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120/208, 277, and 480 V circuits. The nylon insulation is what gives the terminal its voltage rating, so don't trim or split it to make the crimp easier.
5) Is the Sta-Kon RE727 UL listed for electrical work?
It's covered under UL file E9809. That is the recognition reference a facility electrician or inspector will want when terminating 6 AWG feeders or motor leads in a panel.
6) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal for a 5/16 inch stud?
Use the ring, like the RE727. A ring terminal is captive, it cannot back off the stud if the nut loosens, which is why it's the right choice on motor leads, grounding studs, and vibration-prone equipment. A fork or spade is only worth it when you need to pull the lead without fully removing the nut, typically on low-current control terminals, not a 6 AWG power connection.
7) Do I need a special crimper for the Sta-Kon RE727?
A 6 AWG copper barrel is outside the range of a common insulated-terminal hand tool. You'll want a heavy crimper with the correct die for a 6 AWG insulated terminal, hydraulic or a long-handle ratchet type. The nylon insulation stays on the barrel during the crimp, so the die has to be the insulated-terminal profile rather than a bare-lug hex die.
8) Why is this ring terminal blue, and does the color mean anything?
The blue nylon on the RE727 is Sta-Kon's size code for the 6 AWG barrel. Color coding is how a crew picks the right terminal and the right die out of a bin fast, so if you're standardizing an MRO stock, keep the blue 6 AWG rings separate from the smaller insulated sizes.
9) What is the exact part number and where is the Sta-Kon RE727 made?
Order it as Sta-Kon RE727, the insulated nylon 6 AWG ring terminal for a 5/16 inch bolt in blue. Country of origin is Mexico.
