Sta-Kon RD727 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RD727 ring terminal take?
The RD727 is sized for 8 AWG conductor. It's a nylon insulated ring terminal with a copper barrel, so it crimps onto stranded copper 8 AWG. If your conductor is 10 or 12 AWG, the barrel will be oversized and the crimp won't hold reliably, so step down to a terminal rated for that gauge.
2) Nylon insulated versus vinyl insulated ring terminal, which should I use?
The RD727 uses nylon insulation, which holds up better to higher temperatures, abrasion, and solvents than vinyl, and it resists cracking when the barrel is flared during crimping. Vinyl bodied rings are the cheaper general purpose choice for low-abuse indoor runs. For motor connections, engine compartments, and anywhere the harness gets pulled or wiped down, the nylon body is the one to specify.
3) Can I use this terminal on aluminum wire?
No. The RD727 barrel is copper, so it is for copper conductors only. Crimping copper onto aluminum invites galvanic corrosion and a rising-resistance connection. For aluminum 8 AWG you need a terminal specifically marked AL or AL9CU.
4) Do I need a special crimp tool for an 8 AWG ring terminal like the RD727?
8 AWG is past the range of the common hand tool used for 22 to 10 AWG insulated terminals. The RD727 needs a heavy duty crimper with a die nest sized for 8 AWG insulated barrels, either a long-handle ratcheting tool or a die set in a hydraulic/mechanical crimper. Using an undersized tool leaves a partial crimp that pulls out under vibration.
5) Why is the RD727 terminal red, and does the color mean anything?
Red on the RD727 is the insulation color code for its wire range, not a decorative choice. On nylon insulated terminals installers read the color to confirm gauge at a glance during inspection, and red here corresponds to the 8 AWG barrel. It also tells you which crimp die nest and which tool position to use.
