Sta-Kon RG727 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RG727 ring terminal take?
The RG727 is sized for 2 AWG conductor. It is a single-size barrel, so it won't grip 4 AWG or 1/0 properly, and crimping an undersized wire into it gives you a connection that can pull out or heat under load. Match the barrel to 2 AWG copper and use the die station rated for that size.
2) Is this ring terminal rated for 600 volt circuits?
The RG727 carries a 600 V rating and is UL recognized under file E9809. That covers typical commercial branch circuit and panel work at 120/208 and 277/480 V. The nylon sleeve is the insulating element, so don't nick or strip it back during crimping.
3) Is the barrel on the Sta-Kon RG727 copper or aluminum?
Copper. That means it is intended for copper conductors only, not aluminum. Terminating aluminum wire in a copper-only lug creates a dissimilar metal joint that corrodes and loosens; for aluminum feeders you need a lug marked AL9CU or AL/CU with the appropriate inhibitor compound.
4) What is the difference between a nylon insulated ring terminal and a bare uninsulated lug?
The RG727 is a nylon insulated ring terminal, meaning the barrel comes pre-sleeved so you don't have to add heat shrink or tape after crimping. Nylon takes abrasion and flexing better than vinyl and holds up at higher temperatures. A bare lug is the choice when you need to see the crimp for inspection or when you plan to shrink your own color-coded sleeve over the joint.
5) Can I use a ring terminal like this instead of a fork or spade terminal on a panel stud?
A ring tongue like the one on the RG727 is the right call on any stud connection that must not be able to slip off, which is why most panelboard, generator, and motor terminations specify ring. A spade or fork lets you slide the conductor out from under a loosened nut without removing it, handy for service work, but it is not permitted where vibration or a captive connection is required. For 2 AWG at 600 V, go ring.
6) Do I need a special crimper for the Sta-Kon RG727, or will my hand tool work?
2 AWG is beyond the range of ordinary hand crimpers built for 22 to 10 AWG insulated terminals. A heavy barrel this size needs a hydraulic or ratcheting lug crimper with the correct die for 2 AWG copper. The terminal itself is supplied as the lug only; dies, bolts, nuts, and washers are separate.
7) Why is this 2 AWG ring terminal red, and does the color mean anything?
The RG727 sleeve is red. On nylon insulated terminals the sleeve color is a wire-size code rather than a circuit identifier, so installers use it as a quick check that the right barrel size came out of the bin. Don't read it as a phase or polarity marking.
8) Where is the Sta-Kon RG727 ring terminal made?
Manufactured in Mexico. Procurement teams tracking country of origin for trade compliance or bid documentation can record it as MX.
