Sta-Kon RG717 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RG717 ring terminal take?
The RG717 is sized for 2 AWG conductor. It's a nylon insulated ring terminal with a copper barrel, so it crimps onto stranded copper 2 AWG cable. If your cable is a different gauge, use the Sta-Kon ring sized for that gauge instead, since a crimp barrel outside its rated range will not hold mechanically or electrically.
2) Will the Sta-Kon RG717 fit a 1/4 inch stud or bolt?
Yes. The RG717 is a 1/4 inch two-bolt ring terminal, so it lands on 1/4 inch studs or bolts. The two-hole tongue is what you want on a bus bar, breaker lug pad or ground bar with paired 1/4 inch holes, because it keeps the lug from rotating under torque. On a single stud, a one-hole ring is the correct part.
3) Is this red ring terminal rated for 600 volt circuits?
The RG717 carries a 600 V rating and is UL recognized under file E9809, which covers the usual commercial and industrial panel, motor and switchgear work at 600 volts and below.
4) Can I use the Sta-Kon RG717 on aluminum conductor?
No. The RG717 barrel is copper, so it is for copper conductor only. Aluminum cable needs an AL9CU or aluminum-rated lug with the appropriate oxide inhibitor; putting bare copper on aluminum invites galvanic corrosion at the joint.
5) Why is a 2 AWG terminal red instead of the usual color code?
Color on the RG717 is simply the nylon insulation color, listed as red, and it is not the small-gauge red/blue/yellow code you see on 22-10 AWG terminals. Go by the stated 2 AWG wire size and the 1/4 inch two-bolt tongue when you pick the part, not by the sleeve color.
6) Does the insulation on this ring terminal need extra heat shrink?
The RG717 comes with a nylon insulating sleeve over the barrel already, so no separate boot is required for ordinary dry panel work. Nylon also holds up better to flexing and abrasion during pull-in than vinyl. If the termination is outdoors or in a wet location, add adhesive-lined heat shrink over the barrel for a seal.
