Sta-Kon RE6-12 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RE6-12 ring terminal take?
The RE6-12 is sized for 6 AWG conductor. Blue insulation is the color code on this part, so if you are pulling terminals from a bin, blue on a Sta-Kon ring terminal of this type is the 6 AWG body. Crimp it with the die station matched to 6 AWG; undersized wire in a 6 AWG barrel will not hold a mechanical pull.
2) Is the RE6-12 terminal copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum conductor?
The barrel is copper, which means it is intended for copper conductor. Aluminum building wire needs a terminal rated AL or AL/CU with the proper inhibitor compound, so do not land aluminum in this one. For copper 6 AWG it is a direct crimp.
3) What is the difference between a nylon insulated ring terminal and a vinyl or non-insulated one?
Nylon insulation, as on the RE6-12, holds up better to heat, abrasion, and solvents than vinyl and resists cracking when the barrel is flared during crimp. A non-insulated lug would need separate heat shrink or boot to meet the same creepage protection. Pick nylon where the termination lives in a hot enclosure or gets handled during service; pick non-insulated only when you are adding your own covering.
4) Is a ring terminal or a fork/spade terminal the right choice for a panel stud?
Use the ring style, like the RE6-12, anywhere the connection is subject to vibration or where a loosened screw must not release the conductor. The closed ring cannot back off the stud without removing the nut entirely. A fork or spade terminal only makes sense where you need to drop the wire off without pulling the hardware, such as fast-swap terminal strips. On 6 AWG feeders and grounds landing on a 1/2 inch stud, the ring is the standard call.
5) Is the Sta-Kon RE6-12 made in the USA?
Country of origin on the RE6-12 is the United States. That matters on federal, state, and institutional jobs carrying domestic-sourcing language in the spec, so it is worth noting for submittal packages.
