Sta-Kon F2053 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon F2053 ferrule take?
The F2053 is sized for 1/0 AWG conductor, which is the 50 mm2 metric equivalent called out in its description. If your conductor is finer or heavier than 1/0, you need a different ferrule size in the family, since a ferrule has to match the conductor cross section to crimp correctly.
2) Is the Sta-Kon F2053 ferrule UL recognized?
It carries UL file E489056. If your inspector or panel spec requires a UL file reference on terminations, that is the number to cite for the F2053.
3) Is the blue color on this 1/0 ferrule just cosmetic or does it mean something?
The blue insulation on the F2053 is the size code. On insulated ferrules the collar color identifies the conductor cross section, so blue here reads as the 1/0 AWG / 50 mm2 size at a glance during inspection or troubleshooting. It is not a phase or voltage marking.
4) What is the barrel on this ferrule made of, and will it work in an aluminum-bodied terminal?
The crimp barrel is copper, with polypropylene insulation over the collar. Copper barrels are intended for stranded copper conductor. For aluminum conductor or dissimilar-metal terminations you want a connector rated for that service, not a copper ferrule.
5) Do I need a special crimper for 1/0 insulated ferrules?
Yes. A 1/0 AWG / 50 mm2 ferrule is well past the range of the small hand crimpers used for control wiring. Ferrules this size need a hexagonal or four-indent crimp die sized for 50 mm2, typically a ratcheting or hydraulic tool. Crimping it in an undersized die leaves a loose joint that will heat up under load.
6) Why use a ferrule on 1/0 stranded wire going into a lug or breaker instead of landing it bare?
A ferrule gathers all the strands of a 1/0 conductor into one solid pin so nothing splays out or gets pinched off under a set screw, and the polypropylene collar keeps the strands contained where the wire enters the terminal. On large stranded cable that is the difference between full contact area and a connection carrying current on half its strands. Where a terminal is rated for a compression lug instead, use a lug, not a ferrule.
7) Where is the Sta-Kon F2053 ferrule made?
Germany. If you are filing country-of-origin documentation on a government or institutional job, the F2053 is declared as German origin.
