Sta-Kon RAX83 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RAX83 ring terminal crimp onto?
The RAX83 is sized for 26-24 AWG wire, which is the yellow color code on Sta-Kon nylon insulated terminals. That is fine signal and control wire, not power conductors. If you are terminating 22-16 AWG or 16-14 AWG, you need a different barrel size in the family, not this one.
2) What stud or screw size does the RAX83 ring fit?
The ring tongue is a No. 8 stud size, so it drops over a #8 screw or terminal stud. On a #10 stud it will not seat, and on a #6 it will float and can spin under the screw head.
3) Can I use this ring terminal on a 480V control circuit?
It is rated 600 V, so 120V, 240V and 480V control and motor circuits are all within the insulation rating. The limiting factor on this part is the conductor size (26-24 AWG), not the voltage.
4) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork (spade) terminal on my terminal block?
Use the ring, like the RAX83, where the connection must not come loose if the screw backs off slightly - motor starters, panel grounds, equipment studs. A fork terminal slides out sideways under a loosened screw, which is why it is only used where fast servicing matters more than retention. Because the ring has to come off over the stud, the screw must be fully removed to replace the wire.
5) Is the conductor barrel on the Sta-Kon RAX83 copper or aluminum?
Copper barrel with a nylon insulating sleeve. That makes it a copper-only termination - do not crimp it onto aluminum conductors, where you need a terminal specifically listed AL/CU.
6) Do I need a special crimper for the yellow 26-24 AWG Sta-Kon terminals?
Use an insulated-terminal crimper with a die matched to the 26-24 AWG range. The common red/blue/yellow nests on general insulated crimpers are cut for 22-16 and 16-14 wire; crimping a 26-24 barrel in an oversized nest leaves a loose joint that pulls out. Match the die to the wire range, not to the sleeve color alone.
7) Why pick a nylon insulated ring terminal over a vinyl one?
The nylon sleeve on the RAX83 takes rougher handling than vinyl - it resists splitting when the crimp flares the barrel and holds up better to heat and solvents in panel and machine work. Color still codes the wire range, yellow here for 26-24 AWG.
8) Is the Sta-Kon RAX83 made in the USA for a government or institutional spec job?
Country of origin on the RAX83 is the United States, which is what procurement needs for domestic-sourcing requirements. Order by MPN RAX83.
