Metallics FSP1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a Metallics FSP1 firebarrier pillow used for?
The FSP1 is an intumescent firestop pillow, used to pack openings where cable or conduit passes through a wall or floor. Intumescent means the material expands under heat, filling the gap around the penetration. Pillows are the re-enterable option: they stack by hand, with no mixing or curing, and can be pulled out and put back when cable is added or changed later.
2) Should I use a firestop pillow or a firestop sealant around cable penetrations?
Pick by how often the opening changes. Sealant or caulk is for penetrations you seal once and leave alone. The Metallics FSP1 pillow suits sleeves, cable trays and risers where cable gets added over time, because the pillows come back out and go back in without cutting or re-caulking. For a single fixed conduit through drywall, sealant is usually the simpler choice.
3) Is the FSP1 sold as a single pillow or a box?
The FSP1 is ordered as one model, part number FSP1 from Metallics. How many you need depends on the size of the opening, since pillows are stacked to fill the penetration completely.
