Kaba Ilco 15795-AA-26D-KA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Ilco 1579 cylinder work in a Sargent knob or lever lock?
The Ilco 1579 knob and lever cylinder is built for Sargent 6, 10 and 11 (T-Zone) line locks. That is the Sargent key-in-knob and key-in-lever family, and it is the primary application for the 1579. It also fits many Weiser applications, but only when the Weiser tailpiece is used, and that tailpiece is ordered separately.
2) Does the Ilco 1579 cylinder come with a tailpiece, or do I have to order one?
Three tailpieces ship with each 1579 cylinder, which covers the common Sargent knob and lever applications out of the box. The one exception worth knowing before you order: Weiser installs need the Weiser tailpiece, and that one is a separate purchase.
3) Can I get an Ilco 1579 cylinder cut to my existing Sargent key so I don't rekey the building?
Yes. Three Sargent keyways are offered on the 1579: GA (Sargent LA), GB (Sargent LA-LC) and GC (Sargent RA-RC). Match the keyway stamped on your existing key, order keyed alike, and the new cylinder runs on the key already in your tenants' hands. If you are setting up a fresh opening that should not share a key, order keyed different instead.
4) I'm standardizing a mixed building on one key. Which keyways does the Ilco 1579 cylinder come in?
Thirty-one keyways, which is the reason locksmiths reach for the 1579 on a mixed-brand property. It covers Schlage C, E, F, SX and both Everest keyways (EA and EB), Sargent GA, GB and GC, Corbin 60, 67 and 77 plus Corbin and Corbin/Russwin, Russwin RA and D1, Yale 8 and YG, Kwikset, Weiser and Weiser E Falcon, Arrow, Lockwood, Dominion 1054F, Segal 9, Lori L100, Lori 90 (6-pin only) and Lori 80 (5-pin), ILCO UA, and two composite keyways. That lets you bring doors from several different lock brands onto a single key system without replacing the locks themselves.
5) Can a mortise cylinder be used in place of a Kaba Ilco 1579 knob and lever cylinder?
No - they seat in different places. The 1579 is a key-in-knob, lever and deadbolt cylinder that drives the lock through a tailpiece, and it ships with 3 tailpieces. A mortise cylinder such as the Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 Series 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam, the Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 Series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam, or the Adams Rite 4036 five-pin mortise cylinder threads into a mortise lock body and turns a cam. If the existing part unscrews from a threaded collar in a mortise case, you need one of the mortise cylinders; if it sits behind a lever or knob and turns a flat tailpiece, the 1579 is the format.
6) Our facility is on an interchangeable core system - is the Kaba Ilco 1579 the right cylinder for that?
It is a different keying architecture. The 1579 is a conventional pinned cylinder ordered in a fixed keyway - 31 of them, in 5 pin or 6 pin, keyed alike or keyed different. On an interchangeable core program the core pulls with a control key: BEST offers the 1C Series standard 5-pin cylinder core, the Peaks 1CB 150 Series interchangeable core, and the 1CDF drill resistant patented 7-pin brass 150 Series core, and Schlage offers the 20-057 6-pin FSIC rim cylinder with a convertible tailpiece cam plus the 20-057-C full size interchangeable core in the C keyway. Choose the 1579 when the openings are keyed conventionally and the trim is Sargent knob or lever.
7) What is the closest equivalent to a Kaba Ilco 1579 key-in-lever cylinder from another brand?
The nearest same-format peer is the Falcon A23161-05 G Key in Lever Cylinder, a RU/T Series 6-Pin cylinder in the G keyway, supplied keyed different with 2 cut keys. The difference is scope: the Falcon part is fixed to one keyway and one pinning, while the Kaba Ilco 1579 is ordered across 31 keyways including Sargent LA, Sargent LA-LC and Sargent RA-RC, in 5 pin or 6 pin, keyed alike or keyed different. If the door is a Sargent 6, 10 or 11 T-Zone lock, the 1579 is the one built for that trim and it ships with 3 tailpieces.
8) What should I order instead of a Kaba Ilco 1579 if the exit device takes a rim cylinder?
A rim cylinder is a different mount and the 1579 will not serve it. For a rim application, the Schlage Commercial 20-021 is a 6-pin rim cylinder with a vertical tailpiece cam and 2 keys, and the 20-022 is the same 6-pin rim cylinder with a horizontal tailpiece cam; the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. Match the cam orientation the device calls for. The Kaba Ilco 1579 stays with key-in-knob, lever and deadbolt trim on Sargent 6, 10 and 11 T-Zone locks.
9) Is the Ilco 1579 available in 5-pin and 6-pin?
Both. Pin count is a choice at order time, 5 pin or 6 pin, and it needs to follow whatever your existing key system is pinned to, not what the door is. Two keyways constrain the choice for you: Lori 90 (UD) is 6 pin only, and Lori 80 (UE) is 5 pin.
10) I need a key-in-lever cylinder for a Falcon lock, not a Sargent. What do I order?
The 1579 is aimed at Sargent 6, 10 and 11 line locks, so a Falcon lock is a different part. Falcon builds the A23161-05 G, a key-in-lever cylinder for its RU/T Series in 6-pin G keyway, keyed different with two cut keys. Note the 1579 does carry a WA keyway listed as Weiser E Falcon, so check which Falcon keyway your key actually is before deciding.
11) Do I have to replace the whole Sargent lockset, or can I just change the cylinder?
Just the cylinder. The 1579 is a replacement part that drops into an existing Sargent 6, 10 or 11 line knob or lever lock, so the lock body, trim and door prep all stay as they are. That is the cheap way to bring a re-keyed opening or a compromised key back under control without touching the door.
12) For a residential-style handleset or Kwikset deadbolt, is the Kaba Ilco 1579 the cylinder to use or is there a better match?
The 1579 does cover Kwikset and Weiser keyways - KS Kwikset, WE Weiser and WA Weiser E Falcon are among its 31 keyways, and it fits many Weiser applications when the Weiser tailpiece is used, which is ordered separately. Where a specific retrofit is wanted instead, Medeco builds the 1012040, a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts; the 1075127, a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts; the 1065140, a 5-pin retrofit for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder; and the 1065244, a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder supplied with an Emtek tailpiece. Emtek also lists the CY4 cylinder for its own trim.
13) I need a Schlage C keyway cylinder for a commercial opening - does the Kaba Ilco 1579 cover that, or do I need a different part?
The 1579 is available in SC Schlage C, and also in SE Schlage E, SF Schlage F, SX Schlage and the EA and EB Schlage Everest keyways, in 5 pin or 6 pin, keyed alike or keyed different, in satin brass or satin chrome. That covers the key system side. What it does not change is the mount: the 1579 is a knob, lever and deadbolt cylinder. For a Schlage C keyway in a mortise body, the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial mortise cylinder in the Schlage C keyway.
14) Is the Ilco 1579 cylinder rated for commercial use or is it a residential part?
Commercial. It is a replacement cylinder for commercial knob, lever and deadbolt locks, which is why the keyway list runs to Sargent, Corbin Russwin, Yale and Schlage commercial keyways rather than just residential ones. That said, Kwikset and Weiser keyways are on the list too, so it crosses into residential-style hardware on multi-family properties.
15) What is the difference between a Kaba Ilco 1579 cylinder and a cylinder pull on an aluminum storefront door?
A cylinder pull is a pull housing that carries the cylinder, used on narrow stile doors. Adams Rite builds the 4024 cylinder pull with trim plate mounting and the 4025 five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws, both for MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch systems, and the 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pull for wood door applications with the 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch. The Kaba Ilco 1579 is not a pull - it is the key-in-knob, lever and deadbolt cylinder itself, made for Sargent 6, 10 and 11 T-Zone trim and shipped with 3 tailpieces.
16) Is a dummy cylinder an acceptable stand-in for a Kaba Ilco 1579?
Only where nothing needs to lock. The BEST 12E Series dummy rim cylinder with a 1-5/32 inch diameter fills a rim prep and gives the door face a finished look with no key function behind it. The Kaba Ilco 1579 is a working keyed cylinder for knob, lever and deadbolt functions, ordered keyed alike or keyed different across 31 keyways. Use the dummy on the inactive leaf or a blanked prep, and the 1579 wherever a key has to operate the lock.
