2) Do I have to order the Ilco 456 lever left hand or right hand, or can I change it in the field?
Both. Handing is an order option, left hand or right hand, but the handing is field reversible using the CP456 cam plug that ships with the lever. So if a door gets rehung or you stock a few for a building, you aren't stuck with the hand you bought.
3) What is the difference between the 456S, 456-RE and 456-TT lever styles?
Three shapes, and the choice is about the lever end and whether you need to lock from the inside. The 456S is a straight lever. The 456-RE is a return end lever, where the tip curves back toward the door so clothing and bags don't catch on it. The 456-TT adds a thumbturn to the escutcheon so the door can be locked or unlocked from that side without a key. All three come in the same three finishes and in either hand.
4) Will the Ilco 456 escutcheon cover the old holes on my storefront door?
The escutcheon measures 1-3/8" x 4" (34.93 mm x 101.6 mm), which is a narrow plate sized for aluminum storefront stiles. Measure your existing prep against that footprint before you pull the old trim, because anything the old escutcheon covered outside a 1-3/8 by 4 inch area will show.
5) Is the 456 lever a good replacement for a paddle or push-pull on an aluminum door?
Levers operate without grasping or twisting, and the 456 keeps fingers away from the jamb since the motion is a straight downward push to retract the latch. That makes it the trim to choose when you want single-motion operation on a storefront door. A paddle does the same job but only unlatches, so if you need to lock the leaf from the inside without a key, order the 456-TT with the thumbturn instead.
