Kawneer KW035669-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Kawneer KW035669-40 adapter plate actually do on a door closer install?
It is the mounting plate used for a closer-mounted parallel arm setup where there is no transom above the door. The plate gives the parallel arm the correct mounting surface and geometry on the frame side so the closer arm aligns properly. It is a Kawneer service replacement part, not a complete closer, so you are ordering it to repair or re-mount an existing assembly.
2) Can I use this adapter plate if my doors have a transom above them?
No. The KW035669-40 is the without-transom version of the plate. Transom conditions change where the arm has to land relative to the frame, and this plate is built for openings with no overhead transom panel. For a transom install you need the corresponding transom-condition Kawneer adapter plate instead.
3) Do I get the closer arm or the closer body with the KW035669-40?
No, this is the adapter plate only. It is sold as a Kawneer service replacement component for an existing 4040-18PA parallel arm assembly, so the closer body, arm and any fasteners beyond what ships with the plate come from the closer itself or are ordered separately.
4) My Kawneer closer arm is loose and pulling away from the frame. Is the adapter plate the part I need?
On a closer-mounted parallel arm with no transom, the adapter plate is what carries the arm load at the frame, so a damaged or deformed plate is a common cause of a loose or misaligned arm. The KW035669-40 is the genuine Kawneer plate for that condition on a 4040-18PA closer and restores the original mounting geometry. Confirm your closer is the 4040-18PA before ordering, since the plate is model specific.
5) What finish is the Kawneer KW035669-40 adapter plate?
Dark Bronze, applied at the factory, so it matches Dark Bronze Kawneer storefront and closer hardware already on the opening. If the rest of your entrance hardware is clear anodized or another finish, the plate will not match visually even though it mounts the same.
6) Is this plate suitable for a high-traffic commercial entrance, or is it a light-duty part?
It is a commercial part. Kawneer classes the KW035669-40 as commercial-grade and it is used on office buildings, schools, healthcare facilities, retail, government buildings, warehouses and multi-tenant residential entrances. It is not a residential-duty item.
