Kawneer KW035671-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What exactly is the Kawneer KW035671-40, and what does it do?
It's an adapter plate used when a door closer is mounted on the transom rather than the door leaf. The plate sets the closer body in the correct position on the transom and gives it a secure mounting surface. It's a genuine Kawneer service replacement part for commercial aluminum door systems, finished in Dark Bronze.
2) Will the KW035671-40 adapter plate work with any door closer, or only the 4040-18TJ?
Only the 4040-18TJ. The plate is dimensioned for that closer in a transom-mounted configuration, so it isn't a universal closer shim. If the closer on your opening is a different Kawneer model or another brand, this plate is the wrong part.
3) My closer mounts on the door leaf, not the transom. Is this the plate I need?
No. The KW035671-40 is specific to closer-mounted-on-transom installations. A leaf-mounted or regular arm application takes different mounting hardware, so ordering this plate for that configuration will not give you the correct hole pattern or position.
4) What finish does the KW035671-40 come in, and will it match my existing Kawneer storefront?
Dark Bronze is the finish, which is one of the standard Kawneer aluminum framing colors and coordinates with Dark Bronze frames and doors already on the opening. If your framing is clear anodized or painted a different color, the plate will not match visually, though the transom side of a closer plate is often largely hidden behind the closer cover.
5) Can I replace just the adapter plate, or do I have to change the whole closer?
Just the plate. Kawneer supplies the KW035671-40 as a direct replacement so a damaged or missing transom mounting plate can be swapped to restore proper closer function without replacing the closer or the rest of the door hardware.
6) What part number do I give my supplier for the Kawneer transom closer adapter plate in Dark Bronze?
Order it as Kawneer KW035671-40. That number covers the Dark Bronze adapter plate for closer-mounted-on-transom use with the 4040-18TJ, and it is the only configuration the part number carries, so there are no options to specify beyond the number itself.
7) Is the Kawneer KW035671-40 adapter plate rated for commercial door traffic?
It is a commercial-only part. Kawneer lists it for commercial applications such as office building entrances, school and healthcare entry doors, retail storefronts, municipal buildings, and aluminum curtainwall door systems. It is not sold as a residential item.
