Kawneer KW050900-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Kawneer KW050900-40 and what does it do on a door?
It's a low energy power assist door closer, a genuine Kawneer service part for commercial door systems. Power assist means the closer helps take the effort out of opening the door and controls the closing cycle, rather than relying purely on spring force like a standard manual closer. It's a commercial part, not a residential one.
2) Is the KW050900-40 a repair part or a complete new closer assembly?
It is sold as a replacement/service part for Kawneer door hardware assemblies. The intent is to service an existing Kawneer opening rather than replace the whole system, so it is the part you order when the original power assist closer on a Kawneer door has failed.
3) Will the Kawneer KW050900-40 closer work on a non-Kawneer aluminum storefront door?
It is built as a Kawneer service part and its fit is stated only for compatible Kawneer door systems. If the opening is another manufacturer's storefront, match the closer to that system instead; don't assume this drops into a competitor's header or door prep.
4) What finish is the KW050900-40 power assist closer, and will it match my other storefront hardware?
Dark Bronze, applied at the factory. That's the common anodized-look finish on aluminum storefront entrances, so it coordinates with dark bronze frames, pulls and push bars. If your other openings are clear anodized or black, this won't match.
5) Is a low energy power assist closer the right choice for an accessible entrance, or do I need a full automatic operator?
A low energy power assist unit like the KW050900-40 reduces the effort needed to open the door and controls the closing motion, which is the approach used on accessibility-focused commercial entrances. It is not a full-power automatic operator with a push plate actuator; if the opening needs hands-free automatic swing with sensors, specify a low energy operator package instead.
6) What part number do I give my supplier for this Kawneer power assist closer?
Order it as Kawneer model KW050900-40, dark bronze. That model number is what identifies the low energy power assist closer as a Kawneer service part.
7) Is the Kawneer KW050900-40 suitable for a high traffic entrance like a school or hospital?
Yes. It's specified for commercial use and the listed applications include educational facilities, healthcare institutions, retail, government buildings, offices, multi-tenant residential and industrial sites.
