Kawneer KW133482EL-29 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Kawneer KW133482EL-29 exit device fit a 48 inch wide door?
Yes. The El Falcon 1790 rim exit device under model KW133482EL-29 is sized specifically for 48 inch door applications, which is the wide opening size common on storefront and entrance pairs. If your leaf is narrower, the 48 inch device is the wrong length and you need the corresponding shorter version of the series.
2) What does electric latch retraction do on the Kawneer El Falcon 1790 rim device, and what does an integrator need to run to it?
Electric latch retraction pulls the latch back electrically so the door can be released remotely and tied into an access control system. On the KW133482EL-29 that means the device can be dropped into a card reader or push-button release scheme while still giving free mechanical egress from the inside. As with any ELR device, it needs a power supply and wiring run to the door, typically through an electric power transfer hinge or door loop, so plan the electrified side of the opening before install.
3) Is this a rim device or a vertical rod device, and does that matter for my opening?
It is a rim device. The latch throws horizontally into a strike on the frame or, on a pair, into a mullion, rather than latching at the head and threshold the way a surface vertical rod device does. So on a pair of doors with no center mullion, a rim device like the El Falcon 1790 will not secure the opening by itself; you need a removable mullion, or a vertical rod device instead.
4) I'm replacing one failed device on a bank of El Falcon 1790 doors. Will this match the rest?
That is exactly what this part is for. KW133482EL-29 is the Kawneer service replacement for existing El Falcon 1790 installations, so it keeps fit and function consistent across the other openings. Two things to confirm on your existing door before you order: that the failed leaf is the 48 inch size and that the original device was the electric latch retraction version, not a mechanical-only one, since swapping a mechanical device for an ELR unit means adding power to the door.
5) Is the KW133482EL-29 a genuine Kawneer part or an aftermarket equivalent?
It is a Kawneer OEM service part, carried under the Kawneer Service Parts designation. For a building already running El Falcon 1790 devices, that is what keeps the replacement matching the existing prep, mounting pattern and appearance rather than forcing you to re-prep the door.
6) What finish is the Kawneer 48 inch El Falcon 1790 ELR exit device?
Black, applied at the factory. If the other doors in the building are running dark anodized or painted black storefront, it matches without field finishing. There is no other finish choice on this particular part number, so if you need clear anodized or dark bronze to match an existing bank of doors, this is not the one to order.
7) Is this exit device suitable for a school or hospital, or is it a residential-grade part?
Commercial. The El Falcon 1790 ELR rim device is rated for commercial use and is aimed at office buildings, schools, healthcare facilities, retail, government buildings, industrial and warehouse space, and multi-tenant residential. It is not a light-duty residential exit device.
