Kawneer KW133482EL-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Kawneer KW133482EL-40 exit device fit a 48 inch wide door?
That's exactly what it's built for. The KW133482EL-40 is an El Falcon 1790 Series rim exit device sized for 48 inch door openings, so the rail covers the full door width and the latch engages properly at the strike. On a narrower opening you'd want the 1790 rim device sized to that door instead, not this one cut down.
2) What does electric latch retraction do on the Kawneer El Falcon 1790 rim device, and why choose it over a standard mechanical exit device?
Electric latch retraction pulls the latch back electrically, so an access control system or a remote release can hold the door in a push/pull state or admit someone from a card reader without anyone touching the device. Free mechanical egress from the inside is unaffected. If you have no access control on the opening and nobody needs remote entry, a plain mechanical 1790 rim device is the simpler buy. Specify the EL version when the opening is tied into card readers, intercom entry, or an automatic operator.
3) Rim exit vs. vertical rod or mortise: what door prep does the Kawneer 1790 rim exit device need?
Rim means the device mounts on the face of the door and latches into a strike on the frame head or stop. No vertical rods to run to the head and threshold, no mortise pocket to machine into the door edge. That makes it the straightforward choice on a single door or on a pair with a mullion. If you're securing a pair with no center mullion, a rim device is the wrong configuration for that opening.
4) Does an electric latch retraction exit device still let people out if the power fails?
Egress is mechanical and independent of the electronics. The KW133482EL-40 retracts the latch electrically for access control, but pushing the touchbar releases the latch the same way a mechanical panic device does, so the door opens from the inside whether or not the EL circuit is energized. Loss of power removes the remote/dogged-open function, not the way out.
5) Is the KW133482EL-40 a genuine Kawneer service part for repairing an existing 1790 opening?
Yes. It's catalogued by Kawneer as a service replacement part for El Falcon 1790 Rim Exit configurations, so it's the direct-fit route when you're restoring an existing 1790 opening rather than building a new one. For a property manager keeping a building standardized on 1790 hardware, that means the replacement matches what's already on the other doors.
6) What finish does the Kawneer KW133482EL-40 come in, and will it match other bronze storefront hardware?
Dark Bronze. That's the standard architectural dark bronze family used across commercial storefront and entrance hardware, so it reads consistently alongside bronze-finished frames, pulls, and closers. It is the only finish this part number carries, so if your openings are clear anodized or black you'd order the corresponding 1790 device in that finish rather than this one.
7) What is the model number I should quote for the 48 inch Dark Bronze El Falcon 1790 electric latch retraction rim device?
Order it as Kawneer KW133482EL-40. That number carries the El Falcon 1790 rim exit device, electric latch retraction, 48 inch, Dark Bronze. Note the power supply and the access control wiring to the opening are separate items and are not part of this device.
8) Is the Kawneer El Falcon 1790 electric latch retraction device rated for commercial traffic, or is it residential hardware?
Strictly commercial. Kawneer classes the KW133482EL-40 as commercial door hardware, and it's used on office buildings, schools, healthcare facilities, retail, warehouses, and government buildings. It is not a residential device and there is no light-duty version of this part number.
