Kawneer KW133481EL-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Kawneer KW133481EL-40 and what door width does it fit?
It's the Kawneer El Falcon 1790 rim exit device with electric latch retraction, built for 42 inch door applications and supplied in Dark Bronze. It's a genuine Kawneer service replacement part for existing El Falcon 1790 rim exit device installations, so the device length is fixed at 42 inches rather than field-cut to another width.
2) Will the KW133481EL-40 work on a non-Kawneer aluminum storefront door?
It's sold as a Kawneer service part for El Falcon 1790 series rim exit device installations, and that's the fit it's guaranteed against. On a different manufacturer's storefront door or a different exit device series, the mounting prep and rail length won't be a known match, so specify the device family that's already on the opening instead.
3) What does electric latch retraction do on a rim exit device, and is it the same as an electric strike?
Electric latch retraction pulls the exit device's own latch back and holds it retracted, so the door pushes or pulls open freely until the signal drops. On the KW133481EL-40 that retraction is triggered remotely or by an access control system, which lets you run a storefront door in a free-access mode during business hours. An electric strike is a different approach: it releases the frame-side keeper and leaves the latch projecting. If your intent is to tie the door itself into access control and allow push-pull traffic, latch retraction is the configuration you want.
4) Does a rim exit device with electric latch retraction need much door prep to install?
Rim devices mount on the surface of the door and latch to a strike on the frame, so there's no mortise pocket or vertical rod prep involved. The KW133481EL-40 follows that pattern, which keeps replacement on an existing El Falcon 1790 opening straightforward. The one addition over a mechanical device is power: an ELR unit has to be wired, so plan for a power transfer at the hinge or frame and a supply sized for latch retraction.
5) What happens to the door if power is lost to the electric latch retraction unit?
Latch retraction is powered, so when the signal or power drops the latch returns to its normal projected position and the door secures again. Free egress from the inside is unaffected in either state, since pushing the touchbar releases the latch mechanically. That's the reason ELR is used on access-controlled egress doors rather than a device that holds the door unlatched independently of power.
6) Is this exit device rated for commercial traffic or is it a residential part?
Commercial only. The El Falcon 1790 ELR unit is a commercial door hardware component intended for high-traffic openings such as offices, schools, healthcare entries, retail and government buildings. It is not a residential item.
7) I'm matching hardware finish across a storefront. What finish does this Kawneer exit device come in?
Dark Bronze, applied at the factory. If the other openings in the building are clear anodized or black, this unit will not match them, so order to the finish already installed on the rest of the entrances.
