Kawneer KW133500EL-17 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Kawneer KW133500EL-17 exit device handed, and which hand is it?
Right hand only. The KW133500EL-17 is factory configured right-handed, so there is no field-reversing it. If the opening takes a left-hand device, this part won't work and you need the left-hand version of the Falcon 1690 concealed panic ELR device instead.
2) Does electric latch retraction on the Falcon 1690 mean the door stops being an exit in a power failure?
No. Electric latch retraction pulls the latches back on command from an access control system or a remote release, so the door can be pushed or pulled open without touching the panic bar. The panic device itself stays mechanical for egress, which is the point of panic hardware on a life safety opening. Power only controls the retraction feature, not the ability to push out.
3) Will the KW133500EL-17 fit an existing Falcon 1690 concealed vertical rod device?
Yes, that is exactly what it is for. It is a genuine Kawneer service part built as a replacement within Falcon 1690 Series concealed panic vertical rod installations, so it drops into that existing hardware configuration. It is not a conversion kit for a surface vertical rod or rim device.
4) Concealed vertical rod versus surface vertical rod on an aluminum entrance, which should I be ordering?
The Falcon 1690 is a concealed vertical rod device: the rods run inside the door, latching at the head and threshold, so nothing is exposed on the face of the leaf. That is the look most aluminum storefront entrances are specified with, and it is what the KW133500EL-17 serves as a service part for. Surface vertical rod hardware runs the rods on the door face and is the retrofit choice when the door was never prepped internally for concealed rods. A concealed device cannot go into a door that lacks that internal prep.
5) Do I need anything besides the KW133500EL-17 to get electric latch retraction working?
The device is the mechanical and latching half. Electric latch retraction still needs a power supply sized for the retraction current and a path for power into the door, typically an electric transfer hinge or door loop, plus whatever access control device or remote release is triggering it. Order those alongside the device if the opening is not already wired for ELR.
6) Is Clear Aluminum the right finish to match my storefront doors?
Clear Aluminum is the mill-look anodized finish that lines up with standard aluminum entrance and storefront framing, which is the usual match on Kawneer openings. If your other openings are dark bronze or black anodized, this one will read noticeably lighter next to them.
7) Is this Kawneer exit device suitable for residential use?
No. It's classified commercial, and concealed panic hardware with electric latch retraction is built for buildings with controlled egress and access control, offices, schools, healthcare, government and multi-tenant storefront properties. A house has no use for it.
