Kawneer KW133623CD-17 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What handing does the Kawneer KW133623CD-17 1686 concealed exit device cover?
It's the left-hand / right-hand reverse (LH/RHR) version. On a concealed vertical rod device the handing is built in, so an RH or LHR opening takes the opposite part number. Establish handing from outside the door, looking at the face the hinges are not on, before you order.
2) What device sizes does the Kawneer 1686 concealed exit device come in?
Two lengths: 42 inch and 48 inch. Measure the existing device on the door leaf, or the leaf width itself, and match the size already installed. A 48 inch device won't fit a leaf sized for the 42.
3) Will a Kawneer 1686 concealed exit device work on a wood or hollow metal door?
No. The 1686 is a concealed device for Kawneer aluminum stile-and-rail entrances, with the rods running inside the stile, and it is a Kawneer-specific service part. Wood and hollow metal openings take a surface-applied rim or vertical rod device instead.
4) What does the CD in Kawneer KW133623CD-17 mean, and what do I need to dog the device?
CD is cylinder dogging: the device is held retracted with a key rather than a hex key. That means you need a cylinder to dog it, and cylinder dogging is a mechanical feature, so this version is not the one to use where a fire rated opening prohibits dogging altogether.
5) Is this a complete Kawneer exit device or a replacement part for an existing 1686?
It is catalogued and sold as a genuine Kawneer service replacement part for existing 1686 series assemblies, intended to restore function in hardware already on the door rather than to hardware a new opening. If you are building out a new Kawneer entrance, the device should come as part of that door package.
6) Is the clear aluminum finish on this Kawneer exit device going to match my other storefront doors?
Clear aluminum (clear anodized) is the standard mill-look finish used across most aluminum storefront entrances, so it generally matches existing clear anodized Kawneer framing and hardware. It will not match dark bronze or black anodized openings.
7) Is the Kawneer 1686 exit device rated for commercial traffic in schools and healthcare buildings?
It is a commercial-grade device, and typical applications include educational corridor and stairwell doors, healthcare access points, government and municipal exits, retail and hospitality entrances, and warehouse doors.
