Kawneer KW133623CD-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What device sizes does the Kawneer 1686 concealed exit device KW133623CD-40 come in?
Two device sizes are offered on the KW133623CD-40: 42 inch and 48 inch. Pick the one that matches the door leaf width you are servicing, since a concealed device is sized to the door and not field-cuttable like a surface rim device.
2) Is the Kawneer KW133623CD-40 exit device handed, and which handing is it?
Handed, yes. The KW133623CD-40 is built for Left-Hand / Right-Hand Reverse (LH/RHR) doors. If your opening is RH or LHR, this part will not align correctly and you need the opposite-hand device. Stand outside the door: if it is hinged on your right and pulls toward you, or hinged on your left and pushes away, you are looking at LH/RHR.
3) Is the Kawneer 1686 KW133623CD-40 a genuine replacement part for an existing installation?
It is a genuine Kawneer service part, intended to restore an existing 1686 Series concealed exit device installation rather than to convert a door over from another manufacturer's device. Concealed devices are cut into the door rail, so replacing one from a different brand generally means new door prep.
4) What does cylinder dogging do on the Kawneer 1686 exit device?
Cylinder dogging lets authorized staff key the device and hold the latch retracted, so the door push-pulls freely during business hours without re-latching each cycle. You supply the key cylinder. Note that dogging is generally not permitted on a fire-rated opening, so if the leaf is fire labeled you want a non-dogging device instead.
5) Concealed vertical rod versus a surface-mounted exit device, which should I use on an aluminum entrance?
A concealed device like the Kawneer 1686 hides the mechanism inside the door rail, which keeps the glass entrance looking clean and is what the door was originally prepped for. A surface device bolts onto the face of the door and is far easier to retrofit, but it shows. If you are servicing a door that already has a 1686 cut into it, stay concealed; there is no practical way to convert to surface without re-prepping and refinishing the leaf.
6) What finish is the Kawneer KW133623CD-40, and will it match other bronze storefront hardware?
Dark Bronze, applied at the factory. It coordinates with the dark bronze anodized aluminum entrances and frames common on commercial storefronts. If the rest of your openings are clear anodized or painted aluminum, the bronze will read as a mismatch.
7) Is the Kawneer 1686 concealed exit device suitable for residential doors?
No. It is a commercial-only device, used in office buildings, schools, healthcare, retail, government, industrial and multi-tenant residential common-area openings. For a house or an apartment unit door, a panic device is neither required nor appropriate.
