1) What diameters does the Klein Tools 54-inch flex bit auger come in?
Four diameters: 3/8 inch (53716), 9/16 inch (53718), 3/4 inch (53719) and 1 inch (53720). All four are the same 54 inch overall length, so the only choice you make is hole size. Run 3/8 or 9/16 for small low-voltage or single cable pulls, 3/4 or 1 inch when you need room for multiple conductors or larger NM cable bundles through studs and plates.
2) Can this flex auger drill through top plates and studs inside a finished wall?
That is what it is built for. The 54 inch (137.2 cm) spring steel shaft flexes to enter through a cut-in box or wall opening and drill holes through wood framing inside the cavity, and the screw point tip pulls the bit through the wood rather than making you push it. The shaft resists deformation, so it comes back out straight.
3) How do I pull wire back through after drilling with this auger?
There is a fish eye hole on each end of the shaft. Tie or hook your wire to whichever end is accessible and pull it back through the cavity, so you can work from either direction without repositioning. The tapered back also makes retrieving the bit out of the hole easier.
4) Can I use this auger near live wiring in an occupied building?
No. Klein's instruction on this flex bit auger is explicit: never use it on or near live electrical circuits. De-energize the circuits in the wall before drilling, and wear approved eye protection. Follow the safety instructions in the manual for whatever drill you are driving it with.
5) What size hole does the 3/4-inch flex auger actually cut, and will a cable bundle fit?
The 3/4 inch version (model 53719) cuts a 3/4 inch hole through the framing member. That is the size most electricians use for running several NM cables through a stud or plate; step up to the 1 inch model 53720 if you are pulling a larger bundle or conduit-sized runs, or down to 9/16 inch (53718) for a single cable.
6) Does the Klein flex bit auger come with anything to protect the cutting head?
A reusable protective case for the auger head is included, so the screw point and cutting edges are covered when the bit is in the van or the tool bag. No extension or bit holder is included; the auger is supplied on its own.
