Milwaukee 48-13-8256 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use this flexible auger bit to drill through studs inside a finished wall?
That is what it is built for. The shaft flexes so you can feed it into a wall cavity or down between floors and bore through plates and studs without opening up the finish. At 54 inches you get reach from a single access point, and the screw tip pulls the bit into the wood instead of you having to push.
2) How do I pull wire back through the hole after drilling with this bit?
There is a cable pull-through hole at each end of the bit. Drill the hole, then thread your wire or pull string through the hole in the bit and draw the bit back out, bringing the wire with it. Having a hole at both ends means you can pull from whichever end is accessible rather than reversing the whole bit in the cavity.
3) Will this bit slip in my drill chuck?
The shank has Milwaukee's 3-FLAT SECURE-GRIP, three flats that give a keyless or keyed chuck something positive to bite on so the bit does not spin in the jaws under load. It is made for use in a drill, not an impact driver or a hammer drill.
4) Does this auger bit include a flex shaft extension or bit holder?
No. Cable bit accessories, including extensions and holders, are sold separately. What you get is the bit itself in a reusable case that protects the cutting head and the shaft between jobs. If your run is longer than 54 inches, plan on ordering an accessory separately.
5) Is an auger-style installer bit better than a standard ship auger for electrical rough-in?
For boring from a single wall opening, yes, because the shaft flexes and a rigid ship auger cannot turn a corner or ride along inside a cavity. The auger-style flute clears chips as it cuts, so you are not backing out to clear the hole. A rigid auger is still the better choice for straight-line drilling through exposed framing where you can line up square on the stud.
6) Is this bit for wood or can I use it on metal studs?
Wood. The screw tip and auger flute are for wood boring through plates, studs, and joists on small wire system installs. For holes in steel studs or sheet metal, use a step bit or a hole saw instead.
7) I need a 5/8-inch bit. Does Milwaukee's cable auger come in that size?
The 54-inch Milwaukee flexible cable auger is offered in 9/16 inch and 3/4 inch only, so 5/8 is a step between the two. For a 5/8-inch hole in harder material, the Lenox 12111-10DGHS D/S-10Dg diamond grit drill bit is a 5/8-inch option, though it is a different style of bit and not a flexible wire-pulling auger.
