Klein Tools 610-1/4M – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes does the Klein Tools 610 magnetic nut driver come in?
Two hex sizes: 1/4 inch (610-1/4M) and 5/16 inch (610-5/16M). Both are SAE (inch) sizes, not metric, so if you're working to a metric fastener spec these are the wrong drivers.
2) Can I use the Klein 610 nut driver on live electrical work?
No. The 610 magnetic nut driver is NOT insulated and will not protect against electrical shock. For energized work you need a driver rated and marked as insulated (1000V VDE type). Klein also advises approved eye protection when using it.
3) Will this nut driver reach down over a long bolt or a threaded rod?
Only a short distance. The shaft is 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) with an overall length of 3.5 inches (8.9 cm), so it's a stubby made for tight quarters inside panels, boxes and equipment cabinets. The shank is hollow with an unobstructed pass through, so bolt thread can feed up inside it rather than bottoming out, but 1-1/2 inches of shaft won't reach a recessed nut. For deep-set fasteners step up to a 6-inch or 9-inch shaft nut driver in the same hex size.
4) Does the magnetic tip actually hold a nut, or does it just help start it?
The tip uses a rare-earth magnet, strong enough to hold a steel nut or bolt head in the socket so you can start a fastener one-handed overhead or reach into a box without dropping it. It's a magnetized steel tip, so it holds ferrous fasteners only, not stainless or brass.
5) Should I buy a stubby nut driver or a standard-length one for panel work?
A 1-1/2 inch shaft driver like the Klein 610 is for work where you can't get a full-length handle in: inside loaded panels, behind mounted equipment, under a deck in a cabinet. Overall it's 3.5 inches long and weighs about 0.1 lb, so it fits a pouch pocket. If you have clear access and want to spin fasteners faster with more leverage, a standard 4-inch or 6-inch shaft driver is the better tool. Many electricians carry both in 1/4 and 5/16.
6) Will the shaft twist loose from the handle under torque?
The handle uses internal flanges that anchor the shaft against twisting, and the Cushion-Grip rubber handle is shaped for higher torque and comfort. The handle material is rubber over the steel shaft.
7) How do I tell the 1/4 from the 5/16 quickly when they are both in the pouch?
The handle end is color coded for size identification, so you can pick the right one out of a pouch or bucket without reading the stamp. Order 610-1/4M for 1/4 inch and 610-5/16M for 5/16 inch.
8) Are Klein 610 nut drivers made in the USA?
Yes, the 610 series magnetic nut drivers are made in the USA, which matters if you're buying against a domestic-preference or Buy American procurement requirement.
