Klein Tools TI220 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Klein Tools Thermal Imager work with an Android phone or only an iPhone?
Both, but they are two different part numbers. Order the TI222 for iOS devices and the TI220 for Android. The iOS version requires iOS 11 or higher. Pick the one that matches the phone the tech is carrying, since the imager has no display or memory of its own and runs entirely off the attached phone.
2) Will the Klein thermal imager plug in with my phone case on?
Only if the case is 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) thick or less at the port. Anything thicker may have to come off to seat the connector properly. That matters on the job: a heavy rugged case on a field phone will likely need to be pulled each time you shoot.
3) Can I use this thermal imager to check a live electrical panel?
No. The Klein thermal imager is not insulated and must never be used on or near live circuits; it will not protect against electrical shock. Use it for de-energized troubleshooting, hot and cold spot scanning on building envelopes, ducts, and equipment surfaces, and follow all instructions packed with the device.
4) What temperature range can the Klein Tools Thermal Imager read?
It covers -4 to 752 degrees F (-20 to 400 degrees C), which puts steam lines, motors, bearings, and overheating equipment inside its range as well as cold spots and missing insulation. High and low temperature alarms can be set so you get flagged when a monitored system drifts out of range.
5) Is 10,800 pixels enough resolution for finding hot spots in a building?
For locating hot and cold spots it is. The sensor is a 10,800 pixel VOx microbolometer with thermal sensitivity under 60 mK, so small temperature differences show up clearly on missing insulation, air leaks, radiant loops, or a warm bearing. Image detail on screen depends on the phone's display, not the imager. If you need a high pixel-count radiometric image for a formal energy audit report, a dedicated standalone imager is the better tool.
6) Can I adjust emissivity for shiny metal or painted surfaces?
Yes, emissivity is adjustable from 0.01 to 0.99. That is what lets you get usable readings off bare copper, galvanized duct, or polished conduit instead of only flat painted surfaces. The spectral range is 8 to 14 micrometers, the standard long-wave band for building and equipment work.
7) Can I save images to hand off with an inspection report?
Yes. Still photos, video, and time-lapse video all capture and store to the phone, so images go straight into an email or a work order from the free Klein Tools Thermal Imager app. Three palettes are available (ironbow, rainbow, grayscale) if a client or spec prefers one look over another, and readouts include high and low temperatures plus differential temperature.
8) Do I need batteries or a charger for the Klein thermal imager?
No batteries and no charging. The imager draws power from the phone it plugs into, so there is nothing extra to keep on the truck. Plan on the phone's battery taking the hit during long scans.
9) How wide an area does it see, and is there a laser pointer on it?
Field of view is 50 degrees plus or minus 3 degrees, wide enough to take in a full panel face or a ceiling bay from a few feet back. There is no laser sighting; you aim using the live image on the phone and use touch-point temperature to read a specific spot.
10) How rugged is this thing for daily service work, and how big is it?
Housing is aluminum with the electronics inside, and it is rated for a 6.6 foot (2 m) drop. Overall it measures 2.13 by 1.07 by 0.73 inches and weighs 0.068 lbs, so it rides in a shirt pocket or a pouch rather than taking up a tool bag slot.
11) What frame rate does it run at, and does that matter for what I am scanning?
Refresh is under 9 Hz. That is fine for walking a wall, scanning duct runs, or checking a stationary piece of equipment, but the image will lag if you pan quickly or try to follow something moving. Move slowly and let the picture settle before reading a temperature.
12) Does the Klein thermal imager carry any compliance markings for an institutional purchase?
It is marked CE and UKCA. Those are the markings held on record for the imager; no other ratings apply to it.
