Kwikset 687AMD-26DS – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Kwikset 687AMD Amador handleset come complete, or do I need to order the interior side separately?
Exterior only. The 687AMD Amador ships as the outside handleset section with the keyed cylinder and deadbolt, and you have to add a Kwikset interior pack to complete the opening. Budget for that second line item before you order, or you will have a door with no inside trim.
2) Will the Amador handleset fit my existing door prep, or do I need to re-drill?
The latch backset adjusts between 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inches, which covers both standard residential bore positions, so an existing prep in either backset takes it without drilling. Door thickness is spec'd at 1-3/4 inches. The strike is a 2-1/4 inch full lip round corner strike and the latch uses a round corner faceplate, so if your frame and door edge are already prepped square-corner you will need to chisel or swap plates.
3) Can I key the Amador handleset to match the other locks in my building?
Yes. The 687AMD uses SmartKey Security, and it can be ordered keyed alike across an order or keyed different, with an optional key code if you are matching an existing system. SmartKey also lets you re-key the cylinder yourself in seconds without pulling the lock, which is what makes it practical for a property manager cycling tenants. The SMT version works with the Kwikset KW1 keyway, and a KW1 or SC1 keyway option exists across applicable Kwikset locks. Two keys come with it.
4) I need a keyed entry handleset for a door thicker than 1-3/4 inch - what should I use instead of the Amador?
The Kwikset 687AMD Amador handleset is built for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a thicker slab, the Weslock 1411 Traditionale Colonial handleset with Eleganti knob is a single cylinder keyed entry unit rated for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. The Weslock 2810 Hillcrest single cylinder handleset with Hudson knob covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch, which also reaches past 1-3/4 inch. Both are keyed single cylinder handlesets like the Amador.
5) What is the closest equivalent to the Kwikset 687AMD Amador single cylinder handleset from another brand?
The Schlage Residential F60 Addison single cylinder keyed entry handleset with Accent lever is the nearest straight equivalent - both are single cylinder keyed entry handlesets for residential exterior doors. The Amador is ANSI/BHMA Grade 3 with an adjustable 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 backset and fits 1-3/4 inch doors, while the Schlage F60 Addison is Grade 2 and covers a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. The Amador also carries SmartKey Security, which lets you re-key the cylinder yourself, and it ships as exterior only with an interior pack required, whereas the F60 Addison includes the Accent lever interior trim.
6) The Emtek 3002 Memphis looks like the same kind of handleset - can I use it in place of the Amador?
No. The Emtek 3002 Memphis brass mortise entrance handleset is dummy function, as are the Emtek 3004 Hamilton, 3005 Melrose and 3006 Manhattan in the same family - they are surface-mounted trim with no keyed cylinder or latching mechanism. The Kwikset 687AMD Amador is a single cylinder keyed entry handleset with a Grade 3 deadbolt and a 1 inch throw, so it secures the opening. If you are replacing a locking exterior handleset, the Emtek dummy units will not do the job.
7) Is there a keyed entry handleset that ships complete with interior trim instead of exterior only?
The Kwikset 687AMD Amador is supplied as exterior only and needs a matching interior pack to complete the opening. If you would rather order one part number that includes the inside trim, the Schlage Residential F60 Addison comes with an Accent lever, the Baldwin Wesley handleset is offered with an Alcott knob or a Carnaby knob, and the Weslock 2810 Hillcrest single cylinder handleset comes with a Hudson knob. All are entrance function handlesets.
8) I need double cylinder keyed on both sides - what takes the place of the Amador?
The Kwikset 687AMD Amador is single cylinder, meaning key outside and thumbturn inside. For an opening that must be keyed from both sides, such as a door with adjacent glazing, the Baldwin Estates 6542 Tremont double cylinder entry mortise trim is a double cylinder entrance unit for 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door thickness the Amador is built for. Baldwin also offers the 6542 Tremont in a single cylinder entry version if you decide to stay single cylinder.
9) Do I have to specify left or right hand for the Kwikset Amador handleset?
No handing to call out. The Amador 687AMD is reversible, so one part number covers left and right hand doors and you set it during install. That also means you can stock a single SKU across a building instead of splitting the order by swing.
10) Is this handleset single cylinder or double cylinder, and what does that mean for a door with glass next to it?
Single cylinder. Key outside, thumbturn inside. If the opening has sidelites or glass within reach of the inside turn, some local codes push you toward a double cylinder instead. For a double cylinder entry trim of this kind, the Baldwin Estates 6542 Tremont is offered in a double cylinder version as well as single.
11) I want the Amador look on a door that does not need a lock - is there a dummy version?
Yes. The Kwikset 898AMD Amador dummy handleset gives the same lower door handle with no deadbolt, which is what you use on an inactive leaf of a pair or a fixed French door panel. The 687AMD is the keyed entry version.
12) What is the difference between the Kwikset 687AMD SMT and the 687AMD SMC Amador?
Keyway. The SMT is the Kwikset KW1 SmartKey version; the SMC is built for the SC1 keyway so it can be keyed into an existing Schlage-keyed system. Everything else about the Amador handleset is the same. Pick by the keys already in your tenants' hands.
13) Is a handleset like this hard to install, and do I need special tools?
A screwdriver does it. The Amador goes onto a standard bored door prep in minutes, with no mortising of the lock body, and the adjustable latch means you do not have to know the backset before you get to the door. That is the practical difference between a tubular handleset like this and a mortise entry trim such as the Baldwin Estates 6542 Tremont, which needs a mortise pocket cut into the door edge.
14) Which handleset should I choose if I want a higher ANSI grade than the Amador?
The Kwikset 687AMD Amador handleset deadbolt is ANSI/BHMA Grade 3 certified. If the spec calls for a higher grade, the Master Lock HDLBA0615/4D single cylinder deadbolt handleset in the HDLB Series is Grade 2 entrance function, and the Schlage Residential F60 Addison single cylinder keyed entry handleset with Accent lever is also Grade 2. Both are keyed single cylinder entrance handlesets like the Amador.
15) What is a simpler alternative if I do not need the door to lock with a key?
The Kwikset 687AMD Amador is a keyed single cylinder handleset intended for exterior doors where keyed entry is needed. If the opening does not need a key, the Schlage Residential JE285 Barcelona style handleset with Seville lever is a non-keyed entry function handleset rated Grade 2 for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. For a pure pull with no latching function at all, the Weslock 6695 Belmont dummy handleset with Impresa knob and the Weslock 2815 Hillcrest dummy handleset with New Heaven lever are dummy function, both for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors.
16) What is a good alternative if I want keyless electronic entry rather than a SmartKey cylinder?
The Kwikset 687AMD Amador uses a SmartKey Security cylinder with two keys supplied. For electronic access on a handleset opening, the Yale Real Living BYRD226NRRX Assure Lock standalone touchscreen deadbolt with Ridgefield handleset is a standalone unit for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the BYRD226CBARX pairs the same Ridgefield handleset with a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth touchscreen deadbolt. The BYRD256 CBARX is key-free with a Ridgefield passage handleset and trim, also 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch.
17) Are there other keyed handlesets with an adjustable backset like the Amador?
Yes. The Kwikset 687AMD Amador latch adjusts between 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch backset to fit standard door preps. Sure-Loc offers several handlesets with adjustable backset as well: the Aspen AN507 single cylinder keyed entry handleset, the Madison MA507 keyed entry handleset, the Alta AT507 tubular handleset and the Coral CR507 handleset. The Aspen and Madison are the keyed entry options if you are matching the Amador's function.
18) Is the Schlage JI18/19 interconnected lock a substitute for the Amador handleset?
Not for the same purpose. The Schlage Residential JI18/19 is an interconnected passage lock with a keyed deadbolt and Torino lever, Grade 2, for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors - the lever itself is passage function and the security comes from the deadbolt above it. The Kwikset 687AMD Amador is a handleset with a gripping handle and single cylinder keyed entry function. They serve different openings and different trim looks, so confirm which the door is prepped for before ordering.
19) What finishes does the Kwikset 687AMD Amador handleset come in?
Four: satin nickel (619), satin chrome (626), polished chrome (625) and matte black (622). Satin nickel and matte black are the usual picks when you are matching other contemporary trim on the building; polished and satin chrome read brighter and cooler.
20) Does the Kwikset Amador handleset have any antimicrobial coating for a healthcare or multi-family entrance?
Microban antimicrobial protection is built into the finish, which Kwikset states keeps the hardware 99.9 percent cleaner than unprotected surfaces. It is a surface treatment on the trim, not an infection-control device, but it is the reason this Signature Series handleset shows up on touch-heavy shared entrances.
21) What solid brass handleset alternatives are there to the Kwikset Amador?
The Amador 687AMD is a contemporary-style residential handleset. If you want a solid brass entry handleset instead, Deltana offers the 803871B Hanover, the 815871 St. Ann and the 825871 Kingston, all solid brass entry handlesets. Deltana also lists the 810871 Montego handleset, which covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch door thickness, wider than the Amador's 1-3/4 inch.
22) I am standardizing satin nickel handlesets across a building - what else is available in that finish?
The Kwikset 687AMD Amador handleset is offered in 619 Satin Nickel, alongside 625 Polished Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome and 622 Matte Black. The Pamex FS7P31 Lexington single cylinder handleset is supplied in a satin nickel finish and is an entry function unit for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, so it is a workable match if you need a second source for satin nickel entry handlesets on a mixed door thickness building.
