Kwikset 687AMD-15SMC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Kwikset 687AMD Amador handleset come complete, or do I need to order the interior side separately?
Exterior only. The 687AMD Amador ships as the outside handleset trim with the deadbolt and latch, and an interior pack is required to complete the opening. If you order just this, you will have no inside thumbturn or inside knob/lever, so plan the interior half into the same order.
2) Will the Amador handleset fit my existing door prep, or do I have to redrill?
The latch is adjustable between a 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backset, which covers standard residential door preparation either way, and the door thickness is 1-3/4 inch. It comes with a 2-1/4 inch full lip round corner strike and the latch uses a round corner faceplate, so if your current door and jamb are prepped for round corner hardware it drops in without new mortising.
3) Can I key several of these Kwikset Amador handlesets to one key for my rental units?
Yes. Keying is selected at order time as either keyed different or keyed alike, and you can supply a key code if you need to match cylinders already in service. On top of that, SmartKey Security lets you re-key the cylinder yourself in seconds without pulling the lock, which is what makes it practical for tenant turnover across a group of doors.
4) What does the SC1 keyway version mean, and will my existing Schlage-cut keys work?
The 687AMD SMC is built with the SC1 keyway, the Schlage-style residential keyway, rather than Kwikset's own KW1. SmartKey re-key technology is compatible with either KW1 or SC1 keyway options, so if the rest of the property is already on SC1 keys you can bring this handleset onto that key rather than carrying a second key. If your doors are on KW1, order the KW1 version instead.
5) What is the closest single cylinder keyed entry handleset to the Kwikset 687AMD Amador from another brand?
The Schlage Residential F60 Addison single cylinder keyed entry handleset with Accent lever is the nearest equivalent: like the 687AMD Amador it is a single cylinder keyed entry handleset, and it is rated Grade 2 against the Amador's Grade 3 handleset deadbolt. The Schlage F60 Addison covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, while the Amador is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage arrives as a complete keyed set with the interior lever, whereas the Amador 687AMD is the exterior half and needs a matching interior pack ordered with it.
6) Which handleset should I use if my door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
The Kwikset 687AMD Amador is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door. For a thicker slab, the Weslock 1411 Traditionale Colonial handleset with Eleganti knob is also a single cylinder keyed entry and covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors. The Weslock 2810 Hillcrest single cylinder handleset with Hudson knob covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Deltana 810871 Montego handleset covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch.
7) Will an Emtek 3002 Memphis or Baldwin 6542 Tremont work as a substitute for the Kwikset 687AMD Amador?
Neither is a drop-in substitute. The Kwikset 687AMD Amador is a tubular single cylinder keyed entry handleset with an adjustable 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. The Emtek 3002 Memphis is a brass mortise entrance handleset in dummy function, so it neither keys nor latches. The Baldwin Estates 6542 Tremont single cylinder entry mortise trim is entrance function for a 1-3/4 inch door but is mortise trim, requiring a mortise lock body and pocket rather than the bored tubular prep the Amador uses.
8) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand version of the Amador handleset?
No handing to specify. The Amador is reversible, so one part number covers both left and right hand doors and you set it at install.
9) Is a single cylinder handleset like this safe next to a glass sidelite?
Single cylinder means key outside, thumbturn inside, so anyone who can reach the inside through broken glass can turn the bolt. Next to glass, a double cylinder entry set is the usual answer instead, for example the Baldwin Estates 6542 Tremont double cylinder entry mortise trim for 1-3/4 inch doors. Check your local egress code first, since keyed-inside deadbolts are restricted in some jurisdictions.
10) Is the Amador handleset deadbolt strong enough for a commercial entrance?
It is certified ANSI/BHMA Grade 3 and catalogued as residential, so it suits houses, condos and light multi-family entrances rather than high-traffic commercial openings. The bolt throws a full 1 inch. If you need a step up in a residential-style handleset, the Master Lock HDLB Series single cylinder deadbolt handleset and the Schlage Residential F60 Addison are both Grade 2.
11) I want the same look on a door that does not need a lock. Is there a matching dummy handleset?
Yes. The Kwikset 898AMD Amador dummy handleset is the same Amador exterior trim as a lower door handle with no deadbolt, which is what you use on the inactive leaf of a pair or on a door that latches elsewhere.
12) What is the difference between the 687AMD SMC and the 687AMD SMT Amador handleset?
Same Amador handleset body and same SmartKey re-key cylinder; the difference is the keyway. SMC is the SC1 keyway version, SMT is the standard SmartKey version. Pick whichever matches the keys already in use on the property.
13) I need a handleset on a door that does not take a key. What is the alternative to the Amador 687AMD?
The 687AMD Amador is a keyed single cylinder entry handleset. Where no key is wanted, the Schlage Residential JE285 Barcelona handleset with Seville lever is a non-keyed entry function Grade 2 set for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. For a pull with no latch or bolt at all, the Kwikset 898AMD Amador dummy handleset matches the Amador styling, and the Weslock 2815 Hillcrest dummy handleset with New Heaven lever and the Emtek 3006 Manhattan brass mortise handleset are also dummy function.
14) What is the alternative if I want a keypad or smart handleset instead of the keyed Kwikset 687AMD Amador?
The 687AMD Amador is a mechanical single cylinder keyed entry handleset. For electronic entry, the Yale Real Living BYRD226NRRX Assure Lock standalone touchscreen deadbolt with Ridgefield handleset and the BYRD226CBARX Wi-Fi and Bluetooth touchscreen version both cover 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the BYRD256 CBARX pairs a key free touchscreen deadbolt with a Ridgefield passage handleset over the same thickness range.
15) Which handlesets besides the Kwikset 687AMD Amador offer an adjustable backset?
The Amador latch adjusts between a 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backset to fit standard bores. Among peers, the Sure-Loc Aspen AN507 single cylinder keyed entry handleset, the Sure-Loc Madison MA507 keyed entry handleset, the Sure-Loc Alta AT507 tubular handleset, and the Sure-Loc Coral CR507 handleset are all specified with an adjustable backset as well.
16) What finishes does the Kwikset Amador 687AMD handleset come in?
Three: 619 satin nickel, 625 polished chrome and 622 matte black. All three are the same contemporary Amador trim, so you can mix finishes across a building and keep the same profile at every door.
17) Does this handleset do anything for hygiene on a high-touch entry door?
The Amador trim carries Microban antimicrobial product protection, which Kwikset states keeps the hardware 99.9 percent cleaner than unprotected surfaces. It is built into the finish, not a coating you reapply. Worth noting on shared entries in multi-family and hospitality.
18) What tools and how much time does installing the Kwikset Amador handleset take?
A screwdriver. The 687AMD installs in minutes on a standard bored door prep, and Kwikset publishes a drilling template if you are working on a door with no prep at all. Because the latch backset adjusts between 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inches, you are not matching a specific latch to a specific cross bore.
19) I want a traditional brass handleset instead of the contemporary Kwikset Amador. What matches?
The Kwikset 687AMD Amador is a contemporary style handleset offered in satin nickel, polished chrome and matte black. For a traditional solid brass look in the same entry function, the Deltana 803871B Hanover, 815871 St. Ann and 825871 Kingston are solid brass entry handlesets, and the Baldwin 180WYHXATK Wesley handleset with Alcott knob is an entrance function set. Note the Deltana and Baldwin sets ship as complete units, while the Amador 687AMD is the exterior half and takes a separate interior pack.
