Kwikset 81858-001 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the Kwikset 81858-001 top pin used for?
It's a regular top pin (driver pin) for Kwikset pin tumbler cylinders, sized .180 inch. Top pins sit above the shear line in the cylinder bible, under the springs, and are what a locksmith replaces or reuses when rekeying or rebuilding a cylinder. Sold 100 to a pack, so it's a bench stock item rather than a single-job part.
2) Are these Kwikset top pins the same as bottom pins or key pins?
No. The 81858-001 is a top pin, also called a driver pin, and it is one single size at .180 inch. Bottom pins (key pins) are the graduated, varying-length pins that read the key cuts, and they are ordered separately by depth. If you are rekeying and need the pins that match new key cuts, top pins are not what you want.
3) Will .180 top pins work in a standard Kwikset KW1 residential cylinder?
These are Kwikset's own regular top pins at .180 inch, so they're the driver pins for Kwikset pin tumbler cylinders. One caution: .180 is the regular height. Some chambers in master keyed or specialty cylinders use different driver lengths, so if you are rebuilding a master keyed system, confirm the driver heights that system was pinned with before swapping everything to regular.
4) How many pins come in a pack of Kwikset 81858-001?
100 pins per pack. That's enough to rebuild a large batch of cylinders at once, which is the usual reason a locksmith or a property manager standardizing a building buys top pins by the hundred rather than in a small kit.
5) Do I need anything else besides top pins to rekey a Kwikset cylinder?
Yes. Top pins are only one of the three stacks inside a cylinder. A complete rekey also needs bottom pins cut to the new key depths and springs, plus a follower and plug holder on the bench. The 81858-001 pack covers the driver side only, at .180 inch each, 100 to the pack.
6) Is the Kwikset 81858-001 top pin pack meant for commercial work?
It's catalogued for commercial use, and the 100-count pack size fits that: shops rekeying apartment turnovers, school or hospital cylinder rebuilds, and locksmith bench work where a pinning kit runs dry fast.
