Kwikset 83559-008 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a Kwikset builder key and how does it work during construction?
The Kwikset 83559-008 is a large bow builder key, a 6-pin key used on construction keying setups so trades can access the building while the job is running. Once the homeowner's key is inserted, the builder key stops working, so contractors do not need to rekey the cylinders at turnover. It is a key, not a lock or cylinder, so you order it alongside the hardware that supports builder keying.
2) Is the 83559-008 a 5-pin or 6-pin Kwikset key?
Six pin. That matters because a 6-pin key will not operate a 5-pin Kwikset cylinder, which is the more common residential configuration. Match the key to the pin count of the cylinders you are keying.
3) Will an Emtek MS4-KEYBLKC key blank work in place of the Kwikset 83559-008 large bow builder key?
No. The Emtek MS4-KEYBLKC is a key blank cut for the Schlage C keyway, so it belongs with Schlage C cylinders. The Kwikset 83559-008 is a 6 pin large bow builder key made for Kwikset cylinders. The two are different keyways and are not interchangeable - match the blank to the keyway in the lock you are servicing.
4) Is the Kwikset 83559-008 key meant for residential or commercial door hardware?
Kwikset lists the 83559-008 builder key as residential door hardware. For a commercial opening on a master key system, you would be looking at a commercial cylinder key blank instead, not this one.
5) Does buying this Kwikset builder key include a lock or cylinder?
No lock or cylinder comes with it. The 83559-008 is a key only, catalogued as a part/component, so the knobs, levers or deadbolts and any keying service are ordered separately.
6) What is the difference between a builder key like the Kwikset 83559-008 and a plain key blank such as the Emtek MS4-KEYBLKC?
The Kwikset 83559-008 is a builder key with a large bow, intended for use during construction on residential Kwikset cylinders. The Emtek MS4-KEYBLKC is an uncut key blank for the Schlage C keyway, meaning it has to be cut to a key code before it opens anything. So one is a ready-to-use construction key on the Kwikset keyway; the other is stock to be duplicated on the Schlage C keyway.
7) Why is it called a large bow key, and does that affect how it fits the lock?
The large bow refers to the oversized head of the key, which makes it easier to grip and easier to spot on a crowded construction key ring. The bow has no effect on how the key enters the cylinder; the blade and pin count determine that. The 83559-008 is a 6-pin Kwikset key.
8) Does a builder key count toward ADA requirements for a multi-family unit?
Kwikset lists the 83559-008 as not ADA compliant. ADA concerns operable hardware like levers and thumbturns anyway; a key itself is not the item that satisfies that requirement on an accessible unit door.
