Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT-26-UNIV – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT interior trim work with my existing Kwikset handleset?
The 966BRNL-SQT Breton lever interior pack is built for Kwikset 687 and 800 Series single cylinder handlesets. If your exterior handleset is one of those, this inside trim mates to it. It will not work with a double cylinder handleset, since the locking is done by a thumbturn on the interior side.
2) What door thickness does the Kwikset Breton interior handleset trim fit?
Doors from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches. That covers standard 1-3/4 inch exterior doors and the thinner 1-3/8 inch doors common on older homes. The latch is adjustable to fit standard door preparations, and the cross bore is 2-1/8 inch, which is the usual residential prep.
3) My door is 2 inches thick. Will the Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT interior pack fit?
No. It tops out at 1-3/4 inches. For a 2 inch door, a Weslock interior handleset trim covers 1-3/4 to 2 inches, and the Schlage FC59 Alexandria interior trim pack with deadbolt thumbturn goes from 1-5/8 up to 2-3/4 inches, though that one is a dummy function.
4) What is the closest equivalent to the Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT interior handleset trim from another brand?
The Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway is the nearest match in function and door range. It is an inside trim for a handleset with a Collins deadbolt thumbturn, an entrance function, and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch - the same thickness range the Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT covers. The differences are grade and handle style: the JH59 is Grade 3 with a Broadway lever, while the 966BRNL-SQT is Grade 2 with a Breton lever on a square rose. Both are lever trim packs rather than complete handlesets, so the exterior handleset stays on the door in either case.
5) I need interior handleset trim for a door thicker than 1-3/4 inch - what should I use instead of the Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT?
The Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT is built for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, so a thicker slab needs a different trim. The Weslock 2100 Julienne interior single cylinder handleset trim is an entry function unit rated for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Weslock 7900 Carlow single cylinder interior trim covers the same 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch range in a left hand configuration. For a glass knob look on a wider range, the Schlage Residential FC59 Alexandria interior trim pack with deadbolt thumbturn fits 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch, though it is a dummy function rather than a keyed entry setup.
6) Is the Schlage F59 Accent interior pack a substitute for the Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT?
They are not interchangeable in function. The Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT is an entry trim pack that includes a deadbolt, thumbturn, latch and strike, so the interior side locks and unlocks with the turn piece. The Schlage Residential F59 Accent interior pack is a dummy function unit. It also fits doors 1-5/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, where the Kwikset starts at 1-3/8 inch. If the opening needs a working deadbolt on the inside, the F59 will not do that job; if the door is a non-operating or inactive leaf, the dummy pack is the intended part.
7) Does the Breton interior trim lock with a key on the inside or a turn piece?
A turn piece. The deadbolt throws and retracts from a thumbturn on the interior, keyed only from the outside cylinder. Function is entry/office, so the lever passage side works normally while the deadbolt handles the security.
8) Is the Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT rated for commercial use?
No. It is a residential Grade 2 product. For apartment unit entry doors in a multi-family building it is a reasonable fit, but a commercial opening with heavy traffic or a fire rating requirement needs a commercial cylindrical or mortise lock instead.
9) Is this lever trim ADA compliant for an accessible entry?
The Breton lever interior pack is built to ADA/ANSI A117.1 and ANSI/BHMA. A lever handle is what makes it work for accessible openings, since it operates without tight grasping or twisting the way a knob does.
10) What's the difference between this Breton interior pack and a dummy interior trim?
The 966BRNL-SQT is a working entry pack: it includes a deadbolt, thumbturn, latch and strike, so the lever retracts a latch and the deadbolt locks. A dummy trim is surface mounted with no latch or locking at all, used on the inactive leaf of a pair or on a door that stays shut. Dummy examples include the Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward and the Schlage F59 Accent interior pack.
11) What interior handleset trim should I order if the inside lever does not need to operate a deadbolt?
For a non-operating interior, dummy trim packs are the right category rather than the Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT, which is an entry trim with a deadbolt and thumbturn included. The Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward interior dummy handleset trim is a dummy function unit for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, the Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset dummy interior trim is a dummy unit for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Schlage Residential F59 Accent interior pack is a dummy lever pack for 1-5/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
12) Does handing matter when choosing between the Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT and Weslock interior handleset trim?
It can. The Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder handleset trim is sold as a left hand unit for use with Greystone or Rockford exteriors, so the door swing has to be confirmed before ordering. The Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT is a universal design intended for 687 and 800 series single cylinder Kwikset handlesets and uses an adjustable latch that suits standard door preparations. The Weslock 2100 Julienne is listed as an entry function interior single cylinder trim without a hand designation in its name.
13) Will the Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT work with a Weslock or Schlage exterior handleset?
The Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT is a universal design for 687 and 800 series single cylinder Kwikset handlesets, so it is matched to Kwikset exterior trim. Peer interior trims are tied to their own exteriors the same way - the Weslock 7900 Carlow trim is specified for Greystone or Rockford handlesets, and the Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway is an inside trim for Schlage handlesets with a Collins deadbolt thumbturn. Pair the interior trim to the brand and series of the exterior already on the door.
14) What finishes does the Kwikset Breton square rose interior trim come in?
Two: Polished Chrome and Matte Black. To keep an opening consistent, match the finish to the 687 or 800 Series exterior handleset you are pairing it with, since the inside pack ships separately from the outside trim.
15) What material is the Kwikset Breton lever interior trim made of, and how tall is the rose?
Zinc construction, with a square rose and a product height of 2-5/8 inches. Style is traditional, so it sits well against a colonial or transitional door, and the square rose reads cleaner than a round one on a contemporary slab.
16) I want a knob instead of a lever on the interior of my handleset - what are my options?
The Kwikset 966BRNL-SQT uses a Breton lever on a square rose, so it will not give you a knob. The Schlage Residential FC59 Alexandria interior trim pack is a glass knob trim with a deadbolt thumbturn, fitting doors 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch, and it is a dummy function unit. Lever alternatives include the Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway inside trim and the Schlage Residential F59 Accent lever interior pack.
