Kwikset 966KALRDT-514 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Kwikset 966KAL Katella interior pack work on its own, or do I need an exterior handleset too?
The 966KAL Katella interior pack is trim only. It won't operate a door by itself, so you have to buy a Kwikset exterior handleset pack separately to complete the lock. Keys come with the exterior pack, not with this one.
2) Which Kwikset handlesets does the 966KAL RDT interior pack fit?
It is built for Kwikset Signature Series 800 and 687 handlesets. The RDT designation is the round turn piece version of the Katella lever pack, so it matches the round rose styling on those handlesets. It is not a universal trim for other brands' handlesets.
3) Do I have to order a left hand or right hand version of the Katella interior lever pack?
No handing to specify. The Katella lever is fully reversible and installs on either a right hand or left hand door out of the same box, so one part number covers both swings in a building.
4) I need interior handleset trim with no working deadbolt turn - what should I use instead of the Katella 966KAL RDT?
Use a dummy-function interior trim instead. The Schlage Residential F59 Accent lever interior pack is a dummy function in the F Series for doors 1-5/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and the Weslock 1405 interconnected handleset dummy interior trim is a dummy function in the Traditionale Series for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. The Kwikset 966KAL RDT differs in that its deadbolt is operated by a turn piece on the interior of the lock, making it part of a keyed entrance setup rather than pure decorative trim.
5) What is the closest Schlage equivalent to the Kwikset 966KAL RDT Katella interior pack?
The Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway is the nearest match in intent: it is inside trim for a handleset with a Collins deadbolt thumbturn, an entrance function, in the J Series, and it fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Kwikset 966KAL RDT is also an entrance-function interior pack with a lever and an interior turn piece for the deadbolt, carrying an ANSI/BHMA Grade AAA rating, while the JH59 is rated Grade 3. Both are reversible-style interior trim packs that require a matching exterior handleset purchased separately.
6) Can I substitute a Schlage F59 Accent interior pack for the Kwikset 966KAL RDT Katella pack on a keyed entry door?
They are not interchangeable in function. The Schlage Residential F59 Accent lever interior pack is a dummy function, so it provides no interior deadbolt control. The Kwikset 966KAL RDT is an entrance-function interior pack whose deadbolt is operated by a turn piece on the interior of the lock and is built to pair with Kwikset Signature Series exterior handleset packs. If the opening needs an interior thumbturn, the Schlage JH59 Broadway, which includes a Collins deadbolt thumbturn, is the closer functional swap.
7) How does the deadbolt operate from inside with this Katella pack?
From the inside it is a turn piece, not a key. The pack is the keyed-one-side arrangement: key outside on the exterior handleset, thumbturn inside. That is what most residential entry doors use, and it means nobody inside needs a key to get out.
8) What is the BHMA rating on the Kwikset 966 Katella interior pack?
Grade AAA, Kwikset's highest residential rating, meaning top marks in security, durability and finish. It is a residential product, so if you are specifying for a commercial opening under a Grade 1 or Grade 2 requirement, this is not the line to use.
9) What finishes does the Katella RDT interior pack come in, and will it match my other Kwikset hardware?
Two finishes: 619 Satin Nickel and 622 Matte Black. Both are common across Kwikset's Signature Series, so if the rest of the entry set and the passage levers on the job are in satin nickel or matte black, the Katella trim matches without a custom order.
10) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inch - is the Kwikset 966KAL RDT Katella pack the right interior trim?
For thicker doors, look at trim that publishes a wider range. The Schlage Residential FC59 Alexandria glass knob interior trim pack with deadbolt thumbturn covers 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch, the Weslock 6205 Utica Woodward covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Weslock 2100 Julienne entry interior handleset trim covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. Note the differences in function: the FC59 and the 6205 are dummy trim, while the Weslock 2100 Julienne is an entry function, closer to the Katella 966KAL RDT entrance interior pack.
11) Does the Kwikset 966KAL RDT Katella pack need to be ordered by hand, like some Weslock interior trim?
No. The Katella 966KAL RDT lever is fully reversible and installs on both right-handed and left-handed doors, so one part number covers either swing. Some peers are handed instead: the Weslock 7900 Carlow interior single cylinder handleset trim for Greystone or Rockford is a specific left hand part. If you are standardizing a run of openings, a reversible interior pack means you order a single SKU regardless of handing.
12) Which interior handleset trim carries the highest security and durability certification?
The Kwikset 966KAL RDT Katella and deadbolt interior pack is certified ANSI/BHMA Grade AAA, the highest residential security, durability and finish rating. Among comparable interior trim, the Schlage Residential F59 Accent and FC59 Alexandria packs are Grade 2 and the Schlage Residential JH59 Broadway is Grade 3. If a spec calls out a graded interior pack for a residential entrance, that difference in stated grade is what to check against the drawing.
13) Is there a fire rated option for this Kwikset Signature Series lock?
An optional 1/3 hour UL fire rating is available across the functions in this line, excluding functions 802, 819 and 502. If the opening is a rated door, that option has to be specified.
14) What tools do I need to install the Katella interior trim pack?
A screwdriver. The interior pack mounts to the exterior handleset through the existing bore, so a property maintenance tech can swap worn interior trim without pulling the whole set or re-drilling the door.
15) Does the Katella lever pack have any antimicrobial coating?
Yes, it carries Microban antimicrobial product protection, which Kwikset states keeps the hardware 99.9 percent cleaner than unprotected surfaces. Worth noting for multi-family common entries and hospitality doors where touch surfaces get spec'd.
