Leviton 5623-2W – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the Leviton 5623-2W and the 5624-2W rocker switch?
Switching configuration is the only difference in the pair. The 5623-2W is the 3-way version, used at either end of a two-location lighting circuit. The 5624-2W is the 4-way, which goes between two 3-way switches when you need control from three or more locations. Both are Decora Plus commercial/spec grade rockers in white, rated 120/277V and 20A.
2) Can I use this Leviton Decora Plus rocker switch on a 277-volt lighting circuit?
Yes. The Decora Plus quiet rocker is rated 120/277V AC, so it works on both standard 120V branch circuits and the 277V lighting circuits common in commercial buildings fed from a 480/277V system. Same device either way, no separate part number for the higher voltage.
3) Will this switch fit my existing Decora wall plates?
It takes a standard Decora style opening, not a toggle plate. The 5623-2W is part of the Decora Plus line in white, so it drops into the same rectangular rocker opening as your other Decora devices and matches white Decora Plus plates and receptacles already on the wall. If the existing plates are cut for toggle switches, you need new plates.
4) I need to control one light from three locations. Which switches do I order?
Order two 3-way switches and one 4-way. In this Leviton Decora Plus family that is two of the 5623-2W for the ends of the run and one 5624-2W in the middle. Every additional control point past three adds one more 4-way in the traveler run.
5) Is a 20A switch okay on a 15-amp lighting circuit?
Yes. The 20A rating on the 5623-2W is the maximum the switch can carry, so it is fine on a 15A circuit and gives you headroom on a fully loaded 20A one. You cannot go the other way, a 15A switch does not belong on a 20A circuit.
6) What does specification grade mean on a Leviton commercial rocker switch?
Specification grade is the heavier-duty tier above residential devices, which is what gets called out on commercial drawings and in MRO standards. Leviton lists the Decora Plus 5623-2W as commercial/specification grade, so it is the device an electrical contractor uses to satisfy a spec-grade line item on office, retail, or institutional work rather than a builder-grade residential switch.
7) Does the Leviton 5623-2W come with a wall plate?
No. The 5623-2W is the switch device only. Decora Plus wall plates are ordered separately, and you pick the gang count and material to match the box, so budget a plate for every opening on the job.
8) Will this switch dim my lights or work with a dimmer?
No. The Decora Plus 5623-2W is a quiet AC rocker switch, on/off only, so it has no dimming function. If you need multi-location dimming you need a dimmer rated for your load type, with matching 3-way remote or companion devices, not this switch.
9) Is this the right switch for a noisy switch replacement in an office?
Yes, that is what the quiet rocker design is for. The Decora Plus AC quiet mechanism replaces the audible snap of an older toggle, which is why it gets specified in offices, conference rooms, and healthcare corridors where switch noise carries. At 120/277V and 20A it also covers the commercial lighting circuits in those spaces.
