Leviton 40681-W – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What colors does the Leviton 40681 telephone/video insert come in, and what are the part numbers?
Three colors, each with its own catalog number: 40681-I in ivory, 40681-T in light almond, and 40681-W in white. Pick the one that matches the Decora wall plates already on the job so the insert doesn't stand out against the frame.
2) Does the Leviton 40681 insert need its own wall plate, or does it go into a Decora plate?
It is an insert only, not a finished plate. The 40681 snaps into a compatible Leviton Decora multi-gang or combination wall plate, so you order the plate separately with the right number of gangs and openings for the rest of the devices at that location.
3) Can I put telephone and video in one Decora opening instead of two plates?
That is what the 40681 does. It combines a telephone connection point and a video connection point in a single Decora-style opening, so a phone drop and a coax drop share one gang position instead of eating two.
4) Is the Leviton 40681 insert rated for line-voltage receptacles?
No. It handles low-voltage telephone and video wiring only. Keep 120V receptacles on separate devices and, where a multi-gang plate mixes them, keep the line-voltage and low-voltage wiring separated in the box per your local code.
5) I am standardizing a whole building's structured wiring. Can I mix the 40681 with other Leviton Decora inserts?
Yes. The 40681 uses the standard Decora insert profile, so it sits alongside other Leviton Decora inserts and plates in the same multi-gang assembly. Order everything in one color across the building, ivory, light almond, or white, and the phone, video, and data locations all read the same.
6) Will the 40681 insert hold up in a commercial corridor or a rental unit?
It is molded from high impact plastic to resist cracking and denting at locations that see regular plugging and unplugging, which is why it shows up in offices and multi-service commercial outlets as well as houses.
7) Do I need special tools to install the Leviton 40681 telephone/video insert?
No. The insert drops into a compatible Decora wall plate frame and snaps in place, so the work is terminating the phone and coax leads and setting the plate.
