Leviton 5249-TFB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size cavity do I need for the Leviton 5249-TFB floor box?
The Leviton 5249-TFB nylon floor box measures 4.5 x 2.75 x 3.7 inches, so plan the recess in the finished floor around those three numbers. It is a single-gang box, so you get one device opening for one receptacle or device.
2) Is this floor box tamper-resistant for a lobby or retail space open to the public?
Yes. The 5249-TFB is built with tamper-resistant protection to guard against unauthorized access to energized contacts, which is the reason it gets specified in retail, hospitality, and open office areas where the floor outlet sits in public foot traffic.
3) Can I use this for a two-gang floor outlet?
No. The Leviton 5249-TFB is a single-gang box with one device opening. For two devices in one floor location you need a multi-gang floor box, not this one.
4) If I need a PVC floor box instead of nylon, what can I use in place of the Leviton 5249-TFB?
The Pass & Seymour TM1542 series floor box is a PVC floor box and is the alternative to reach for when the job calls for a PVC body rather than the nylon housing used on the Leviton 5249-TFB. Verify the cavity dimensions in your floor against the 4.5 inch by 2.75 inch by 3.7 inch footprint of the Leviton before assuming a one-for-one swap, and confirm the TM1542 configuration matches the single device opening the Leviton provides.
5) Is a nylon floor box tough enough for a commercial office floor?
Nylon is the housing material on the Leviton 5249-TFB, chosen to resist impact and wear at floor level where boxes take foot traffic and rolling chairs. It is rated by Leviton for commercial office and conference room floor outlets as well as residential use.
6) Will this work in an existing floor during a renovation, or is it new construction only?
Both. Leviton lists the 5249-TFB for renovation and new construction recessed floor installs. What decides it on a retrofit is whether you can open a cavity in the finished floor to take a 4.5 x 2.75 x 3.7 inch box.
7) What is the difference between the Leviton 5249-TFB floor box and the Pass & Seymour TM1542 floor box?
The main difference is the housing material. The Leviton 5249-TFB is a nylon 1-gang floor box with a tamper-resistant design, measuring 4.5 inches by 2.75 inches by 3.7 inches. The Pass & Seymour TM1542 series floor box is a PVC-bodied floor box. Both are recessed floor boxes for in-floor power access; choose based on whether your spec calls for a nylon or a PVC body, and confirm the device opening count you need, since the Leviton is a single-gang layout.
8) Does the Pass & Seymour TM1542 floor box give me the same tamper-resistant protection as the Leviton 5249-TFB?
Tamper-resistant protection is called out specifically on the Leviton 5249-TFB, which carries an integrated tamper-resistant design to guard against unauthorized access to energized contacts. The Pass & Seymour TM1542 is identified as a PVC floor box by series. If your facility requires tamper-resistant floor power access in public or high-traffic areas, the Leviton 5249-TFB is the one that states it.
