1) Can I use the Leviton Renu RE151 with a standard screwless wallplate, or does it need a special plate?
Renu switches only work with Renu wallplates, which are sold separately. The face on the switch snaps off and on, and the plate is built around that face, so a standard decorator or toggle plate will not cover it correctly. Plan the plate into the order for every device you install.
2) Is the Leviton Renu 3-way switch rated for 277V commercial lighting circuits?
Yes. The Renu 3-way is rated 15A at 120/277VAC, so it runs on the 277V branch circuits common in commercial and institutional buildings as well as standard 120V residential work. Motor loads are covered too at 1/2HP on 120V and 2HP on 240V-277V.
3) Do I need to run a ground wire to the Renu RE151 switch, or is it self-grounding?
The Renu 3-way has a self-grounding clip plus a green ground screw. In a properly grounded metal wallbox the clip does the work through the strap and mounting screws. In a plastic box, or anywhere the box itself is not grounded, land the equipment ground on the green screw.
4) What is a 3-way switch used for, and do I need two of them?
A 3-way controls one light or group of lights from two separate locations, which is what you want at the top and bottom of a stairway or at both ends of a hall. They work in pairs, so a two-location circuit takes two 3-way devices, not one. The Renu is classified 3-way; a single-location circuit uses a single-pole device instead.
5) Can I change the color of a Renu switch later without replacing the device or rewiring?
Yes. The face snaps off and a new one snaps on, using an RK15X color change kit. The wiring and the strap stay in the box. That is the practical reason property managers standardize on Renu across a building: repaint a unit or rebrand a corridor and you swap faces instead of pulling devices.
