Leviton RTF01-10Z – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can a Leviton RTF01-10Z fan speed control be used to dim lights on the same switch?
No. The RTF01-10Z is a fan speed control, not a dimmer. It is built to vary the speed of a ceiling or exhaust fan motor on a 120V AC circuit, and a light load belongs on its own control. If a fixture has both a fan and a light kit on one wire, you need two devices (or a fan/light combination control), not this one.
2) Will the Leviton quiet fan speed control work in a 3-way setup with two switches?
No. It is a 1-pole (single pole) device, so it controls the fan from one location only. A pair of switch locations on the same fan needs 3-way devices, and a speed control cannot be paired that way.
3) Does the Leviton RTF01-10Z fit a standard single-gang wall box?
Yes. The RTF01-10Z mounts in a standard electrical wallbox and takes a compatible Leviton wall plate, so it drops into the same opening as the toggle switch or old speed control you are pulling out. You supply the plate separately.
4) Will a Leviton quiet fan speed control stop my ceiling fan from humming at low speed?
That is what the "Quiet" designation addresses. The control is built to regulate fan speed with minimal motor hum or buzz at reduced speeds, which is the usual complaint with cheaper speed controls. It is a variable-speed device, so you get adjustable speed rather than a single on/off speed.
5) Can I use the Leviton RTF01-10Z on a bathroom exhaust fan, not just a ceiling fan?
Yes, exhaust fan speed adjustment is one of its stated applications, along with residential ceiling fans and light commercial fan installations. It is a 120V, 60-Hz device, so it suits standard single-fan branch circuits in new construction or a retrofit.
6) Will the Leviton RTF01-10Z run a 240V or three-phase fan motor?
No. It is rated 120V AC, 60-Hz only. A 240V fan, a three-phase commercial exhaust motor, or an ECM/DC motor fan that calls for its own controller all need a different control.
7) What color is the Leviton RTF01-10Z fan speed control?
White. If you are standardizing devices across units in a building, the white finish coordinates with standard white wall plates and the rest of the white device line on the opening.
8) What part number do I order for the Leviton quiet fan speed control?
Order Leviton MPN RTF01-10Z. That is the single orderable model for this 120V, 1-pole quiet fan speed control in white.
